AJ may be one of the most famous Diezel users, but not one that really represents the Diezel sound.

Do you stil have the VH4, man?To provide empirical evidence:

16 Ohm Greenbacks through an sm57 on the cone.
AJ likes to kid people but I think these settings sound quite a bit like him. Maybe a bit too little lows.
The 12 o'clock EQ settings (and that's still bright with presence at 3 and deep at 2 o'clock) do not sound like him in the heavy songs. At least that is my impression.
I'm using KT77s, however, and I do not own a Mesa oversize with Mesa V30s.
And maybe some of the high end is really coming from his plexi.
So, whatever. The last album sucked anyway.
Yeah, my man!Do you stil have the VH4, man?
You are absolutely correct about adding the Marshall....Glorious.You can close with just the vh4 . But if you buy a cheap DSL and run it UNDERNEATH the vh4 time you will nail it. Don’t need an old Marshall like he has . Lately he adds a third amp
Mainly riviera Slipknot amp
Couldn't agree more Jones can only nail his signature tones with the VH4....And I love what Hetfield and Corgan have done with the Diezel sound as well. Just a side note: On 10,000 Days the Rivera that Barresi mixed in was actual a Rivera KR7 prototype or very early production model. It colored his Diezel tone a little more "metal" to my ears.He messed around with a Knucklehead Tre and a few other amps as per EvilJoe. But his sound is definitely VH4 dominant, with that Marshall giving it the sizzle. I know we're all entitled to our own opinions and what our ears hear, but honestly, I can't think of another player who epitomizes the Diezel sound with more regularity and consistency than AJ. Yes, his tones move around album to album (barring Undertow/Opiate v.1), but that thick 3D insanity can only be had with a VH4 at the end of the chain. And honestly, AJ like so many other guitarists, has his techniques and approaches and therefore his inherent "personal toanz" that no one can cop *perfectly*, cuz c'mon, he's AJ and that's *his* tone.
Rossdale of Bush did some work with the VH4
Corgan, obviously
Hett, Stef, etc etc etc. Wanna hear some SICK tones listen to Diezel's very own Stapfer play his strat into a Hagen. Madness!!
Live bands' crews mic their amps, and they do it at low volumes (barely turned up) so that they don't feed back into the other microphones on stage. A lot of bands' sound crews/techs won't even mic an amp on the "front line" because of feedback, which is how the "isocab" concept has grown... essentially doing exactly what is done in studio, but on a stage. It wasn't practical to do this until recent times although it's always been that way to some degree. On my 2016 silverface these settings make for a quite bright tone - compared to what is the NORMAL dark, fat signature Diezel sound with all knobs at 12 o'clock.
i have a mesa 4x12 with 8Ohm V30 (although not the oversized ones) and a marshall 4x12 16 Ohm with V30s.To provide empirical evidence:

I think with Tool the guitar sound varies quite a bit from song to song. On Aenima there a lots of fat dark tones.i have a mesa 4x12 with 8Ohm V30 (although not the oversized ones) and a marshall 4x12 16 Ohm with V30s.
the mesa is a LOT darker and smoother.
With the same settings the Marshall 4x12 is uber shrill and unusable!
long time diezel user, but not a fan of AJ tone. too compresses, fat, stuffy, bloated and a weird fizzy top end. turning up the mids all the way, sounds horrible to my ears so i am not surprised. Since at least 10.000 days i can hear a Diezel in there.
I like James' St. Anger tone better, so you can get an idea where i am coming from.
Where can we hear Ultradeaf "Song Unsung" ?I will say that I can dial in Lateralus and "Jambi" tones pretty easily on my 2011, but I am usually dialed in to the tone used on Ultradeaf song "Song Unsung" from the '85 album (JB in an ESP Horizon, or 498T in an LP). But for the next album (not out yet), tone has changed a little due to approach, tuning and pickups.
In summary, just like any of us, his tone has changed a little over time. Tones on the last Tool album were all over the place from song to song. The VH4 is quite versatile- between channels 3 and 4, you can at least dial in and copy two of the Tool guitar sounds.
yeah i doubt he uses/used the JB. i hear scratchy ceramic top end on almost everything. so SH-6 makes sense.
i like to listen to tool from time to time. but the sounds bothers me a lot of times, because there are things in his sound which i had in my sound too and managed to dial out.I think with Tool the guitar sound varies quite a bit from song to song. On Aenima there a lots of fat dark tones.
Ticks&Leeches on Lateralus is ultra bright and cutting. I think his sounds fit the music well. That is what counts, not so much the sound itself.
