I've been looking for a cheap 412 cab for my studio purposes and I came across this badass looking Peavey 412MS - sheffield 1290 equipped. I love the fact that it has that 80s thrash look and it's front loaded (my VHT 412 2530 is also front loaded) Now, I now most people hate those speakers but my initial thought is to to either mix em or swap em all. I have only tried the Peavey Scorpions which I found OK. I know that these 1290 are somewhat Peavey's take on Celestion T75s. Has anyone tried mixing these speakers with Celestion or Eminence maybe?I might even try to Mojotone BV30H - which I really like in this video.

Please check out Avatar speakers. The AV75s are especially killer sounding and dynamic/tight/punchy. I have some of the AV60s as well for that V30S sound and a Fane M65, which is great on its own or mixed in but the AV75s have everything in the frequency spectrum, as it were.

Unfortunately I dont think these are available in Europe...

I had a rear-loaded 412MS with 1290's, and they mixed great with V30 types. See this video (not mine) for an example.

My favorite arrangement wasn't two of each actually, but one of each with the other two holes left open. You mileage may vary, but it is cheaper to try that first since you only need to buy one V30.

What other speakers you have now?
My mesa cab is loaded with the mesa v 30s and my splawn is loaded with UK t75 top/ v30s bottom. I'm considering trying the mojotone mentioned above.

Nice that’s a very solid cab! I still have my 412MS rear loaded cab. It was also loaded with the 1290 speakers. I liked those speakers…. Had them in there for maybe 20+ years.
There was a time when I mixed them with 2 eminence the governor speakers. I remember that sounding really good. I think I kept them in an X pattern.

I eventually swapped them all out a couple years ago with 4 Celestion EVH speakers.

Thx ! I'll try it tomorrow with the stock speakers to see if I like em or not!

Funny thing is those 1290's are actually my favorite speaker, but I don't really like them in that particular Peavey cab. Most Peavey cabs are built like tanks and that cab is no exception. I just like the other 412M/MS cabs that are rear loaded better. I don't know if it's the rear vs front load, metal grill vs cloth-ish grill or actual construction of the cab. They just sound better to me in the other cabs. They fucking crushed in my old Emperor 412 Tall staggered speaker placement cabs.
As far as mixing them with other speakers I'd say something that is a bit more neutral, middy and or smooth.

I played my Folkesson modded yesterday thru the cab and it sounded killer! Really tight maybe a bit scooped but overall I like it a lot!

I was under the impression that these Peavey MS cabs came stock with K85's?

That's a good starting point anyway, especially paired with V30's.

Eminence Swamp Thangs are a nice choice ... especially once they break in.

They can handle some wattage too, so they are clear and punchy, but not biting. Very pleasing to the ear.

Just my 2 cents.

I am really wanting to try some Swamp Thangs. I like the idea of a big low end, and not fizzy highs.

I just ordered some G12K-100s first though, because I also want to try them.

Wanting to try some speakers that are not just nasal mid honk machines.

The older rear loaded cabs are the ones that came with the 85's. However, Peavey did start putting the 1290's in the rear loaded cabs towards the end but they also used a different grill cloth on those.
The metal grill front loaded cabs all came with the 1290's.

Yeah, I will agree that those cabs are tight. Those 1290's also have a pretty tight low end. I do really like those cabs. They look cool too.

I have two old 5150 cabs, one with a pair of swamp thangs, and one with a pair of wgs vet30’s. I have the other two speaker holes covered and sealed, and use them as oversized 2x12’s and they are crushing. Have had them next to full mesa cabs several times, and i prefer mine.

I have 2 in an old ADA Split Cab ...which is a bit undersized, and I think I like it. It seems to choke out the lower resonance, and focused the lower mids.

I was actually expecting a bit more low end ...but I dial a lot of that out, and was very impressed. Especially once they broke in.

I run my cab with a 120 watt Laney, and it is an excellent pairing.

Not really a lower priced speaker, as I believe I paid close to 170 a piece, at the time. But there again, not exactly expensive either.

I also tend to like speakers that most don't...so I may not be the best judge. ?
