how much were Mesa charging for MB to do the ++ mods out of curiosity? Just to get a feel of another biz offering mods vs individual techs or modders.

I am not defending Marshall's pricing, I just don't think the pricing policy of a biz that size aimed first the maxing profits is comparable to competent individuals offering mods. I'm asking for MB's mods bc AFAIK they're non intrusive; no holes drilled etc.

1K minimum….C’mon, that is complete nonsense. Less than 50 dollars in parts (especially Marshall buying wholesale or bulk) and how much labor? 1 hour? Who know’s how fast Marshall has it down on their line to drill the toggle holes and add the parts. Even a dude in their garage if they’re repeating the same thing would get very fast. Who is shipping an amp internationally to a premium modder for this basic work? No one.
I worked with an amp guy here in Atlanta on my ‘75 50 watter and not only did we spend two long sessions choosing coupling caps and other minor tweaks while I played, he pulled the board and redid all the solder connections (needed it) and also reworked the grounding scheme. Ran me about $500.

Show me a price list for any of the modders that are on our forum. I guarantee you most are at 1k on up for any of the mods they offer. I'm not saying that these Marshalls are a better deal; but they are on par with the market. Whether you like it or not. People have told me what these mods cost, and that's a fact. Unless they're misquoting. Hermansson? Shit, you can buy 2 vintage Marshalls for what you'll have into 1 amp with him. I don't have a problem with that, it is what it is. But when the stock prices of these Marshalls are 2400/2600, the modded versions from the factory I'd expect them to be priced right where they are....which is right where the Mesa/Gibson stuff is as well.

Sure I could pay out the ass for Chip Foose to rebuild a Dodge Dart but what does that have to do with having a local guy installing a fuel injection kit?

Also to consider is the economy of scale with someone like Marshall doing this vs. a single dude in a workshop.

Unless I'm asking them to design the mod, if I take my amp in, I'm looking purely at parts and bench time. I've not ever dealt with many other techs, but that's my experience with the one I use. IIRC, he ballparked me a couple hundred bucks to mod my Ceriatone 2203 to JEL specs.

The price point just motivates me to work on my own small box 1987x weber clone that I have sitting on my bench for years now. I upgraded all the caps at one point and knowing what I know now I bet I could make it into a frankenscreamer and bot care about holes in the chassis. For the half the money, I'd still go ceriatone. He's got all the mods on his now..he'll, he even posts the layout. Never get why people bag on Ceriatone, he's doing what everyone else does and he provide schematics and layouts. No goop, no secrets. Just value for your $

Yeah... fuck Marshall amplification! I used to buy real 67 plexi Marshalls for $900 in 1998. How dare them charge $3K+ for a hand wired brand new Marshall plexi today!
They should at least match prices from other manufactures, like Friedman, Bogner, Fortin, Mesa, etc... who clearly sells they newly released 100w amps at no higher than $2K.
Fuck Marshall... they are completely unreasonable and out of their fucking minds.

All I AM saying, is, the price point these factory modded amps are at, are imo totally predictable with what the price point is for ALL these higher gain amps that we've been seeing over the past few months. This isn't hard to figure out.

Yeah! A couple of pots, $5, a chassis $33, a couple of transformers $81.75, the head box is no more than $47. A bag of caps and another one of resistors are not more than $3.62.
I can make one for less than $500.00 bucks, so $3,500.00 is outrageous for a hand wired amp, even if it's coming from a company that has been in business for a little bit!
Fuck Marshall and all the overpriced piece of shit amps they have been making since their beginning.

Ok, I can see your point. But, again, that would suggest that the stock form 2203 Ri/1959HW Ri are MUCH better deals than those other retail amps, no? I'm simply comparing the modded Factory Marshalls that are now high gain amps, to the other resissue amps (C+, Recto) and also the Friedman line of 100w amps. They all chime in around 3500-4K.
That's my point.
That these prices are predictable, and in line with other comparable high gain amps.

For a basic Jose mod, just some diodes and a pre-tone stack master, I charge less than $1500 (Marshall's mark up. from the regular 1959). For something more involved like adding another tube for 4-5 gain stages and/or all sorts of other voicing mods and changes to the circuit, then you start adding $.

My only real point to my responses is, the price points for these Marshalls are totally predictable when you look at the rest of the new factory high gain amp market. 3500-4K seems to be the norm, unfortunately.

I agree the prices are what I would’ve expected (worth it or not), but those Hermansson Marshall’s are gutted rebuilds, not mods. The Recto’s he mods and charged ~$1200 as the base price and then a bit more for extra add on features. Not unreasonable imo and guessing his recto mods are likely more extensive than most Marshall mods given how radically different they sound and feel than stock Recto’s
