Meh.

Had an HRG ++; next to my SRG +. I liked the boosted + tone better than the ++. Adds more low mids and a touch more gain than the +.

Can I get a cliffs notes on the difference between + and ++ besides "one is the hetfield mod"

Is it an extra gain stage? What exactly is the circuit difference and how does it affect the sound?

Isn’t the extra + doable on a push pull? Why have a completely separate amp?

IME the ++ sounds gainier, more compressed, a bit tighter, more low mids, a bit smoother, less nuanced. I understand the appeal, but prefer the +

Not many talk about it, but my favorite is actually the iic (no +) I got last week and think it likely would be for you too. More raw/rough, jagged, open, bright, cutting and aggressive than c+’s IME. Less scooped too, but the c+ imo is still the king for leads, the special feel and of course if you want more the Metallica sound. Unfortunately most have been converted to c+’s and that’s to me a bigger sin than modding ‘60’s Plexi’s or Rev C’s lol

You can make a raw amp smooth (tone knobs, amp EQ, pedals) but it is very difficult to make a smooth amp come alive and be raw. I’ll always want an amp that’s more raw. I can do a lot more with that.
I like any amp where I don’t need to max the mids, treble or presence. The only exception for me is certain old marshals that sound good that way.

I prefer raw amps too, but I admit it can be so raw and jagged that it’s not so easy to smooth out, but I haven’t really tried lol. I will say still though it doesn’t get the silky quality, feel or liquid leads the same way as the iic+ and think the notes inherently have a denser quality on the c+, but overall enjoy the c more. How it got so overlooked is way beyond me. One of my favorite amps

Probably because there are no pictures of James Hetfield or John Petrucci playing one.
