Distance from the bridge to the pickup?

How much difference does it make? The majority of my guitars have the Gibson style Tune-o-matic style bridges on them. I have 2 that I just cant find the right pickup for. I noticed that the bridge is about 1/4 of an inch further from the bridge pickup than the rest of them. Is this my imagination?

Yep. I want it at a very specific distance. Or at least on the lower strings I do. One of the reasons I did this angle.

I noticed this a couple years after I built my first partscaster and tried to swap the pickguard. Here’s a pic of a WD Music pickguard on top of a Warmoth pickguard. Pretty much exactly 5mm difference at the bridge.

I just measured all my guitars and the WD Music pickguard guitars are all around 37-38mm from the low E saddle to center of pickup screw pole. My ‘80 LPC is 36mm and my ‘13 LP Std is 35mm. I’ve had other guitars that measured way more and I struggled mightily finding the right pickups. And that’s probably the key, just finding the right pickups for that particular guitar.

Definitely a big factor in my experience.

SG - super close to the bridge. Tons of bite

Les Paul - just right

PRS - soft little bitch sound
Part of its sound is also the PRS’s being doused in all that shiny poly. I wish they sounded the way they looked. I had this gorgeous blue Custom 24 wood library that played so sleek, but sounded so sterile and choked. Even the Carvin’s I had at the time sounded better. I also hate their neck pickup sound from the placement lol. I like my neck pickups closer to the neck for a more liquid, sweet sound
