Kind of thing doesn't usually come up in conversation, tbh. But if I can remember I will make sure to ask next time we speak.

Do you think that someone with essentially no knowledge of the language (me) could still have an enjoyable time there?

You can get a translation device on Amazon; be sure the language you want can be downloaded to the device so you don't need to be connected to a network. Many of these devices support 100+ languages but much less on the device without a network connection.

Alternatively, you can get a pay-as-you-go local phone and load a translator app.

One of my planned retirement activities is to travel in Asia, again; I had a 10 year visa to China but Covid and my passport expiration killed that; I've been to several countries in Asia for work, so really didn't have time to explore or be a tourist. Japan is at the top of my list, especially the far south, Kagashima, Miyazaki, and the southern islands, many are lightly populated and tropical.

The further you go from the tourist centers, the less likely you'll find English speakers.

Yes absolutely. English is taught here and most can speak a little English. With the yen rate it makes things cheaper for tourists too. There is an app that helps you get around on the train system that makes it very easy. It’s worth a trip and you’ll have fun.

Ughhh.... I hate to be a weeb... but Ochanomizu doesn't mean guitar street. It means tea water; some old boy made a cup of tea from the river flowing through the area once, and that's how it was named.

I love Ochanomizu though. I go there at least 2 or 3 times whenever I'm in Japan. English will get you some of the way, but rudimentary Japanese will help.

I bought a lovely Tokai Les Paul from Yamano Gakki last year. Was hell getting it back to the UK on two planes, but I managed it!!

Yes, true the city named Tea (Ochano) and Water (Mizu) combined. Guitar street is just the nick name because of all the guitar shops on the block

No, my number works fine here. Text and phone calls works fine. Here is the text I got from TMobile once the plane landed:

Just spent 6 days in Tokyo. Went to 4 concerts and 1 fest so only got to check out Ochanomizu a little bit this time. Shops in Tokyo open around noon yet gigs often start at 5/6pm which leaves me not much time shopping.

Scored some nice shirts and jeans though.
