This is a PSA to update your forum passwords and watch your accounts like a hawk. I'm a member of the My Les Paul forum, but I rarely visit it or post. I think like a lot of people I have a junk email address that's separate from my primary and work email addresses, and that's where a lot of my forum related stuff goes. I was checking that email last night and saw that my password had been reset on the My Les Paul forum. I quickly went over there, reset my password to get back in and saw that not only had someone listed a fake R9 Les Paul under my username for a price too good to be true, but my inbox was FULL of messages between the scammer and forum members where they were pushing for PayPal Friends & Family payments. At least one person bought the "guitar" and I'm still trying to sort out just how many people got scammed. Luckily, F&F wasn't used for the one sale that I'm aware of, so they should be able to get their money back. I've been in communication with the mods and all of the people who had messaged about it, but it's a colossal mess.

Please, please, please be careful out there. The scammer obviously knew enough about guitars to make the listing and PM replies sound legit. I'm horrified. It was also posted on The Gear Page not long after under a different account. Now's the time to update your passwords.

I almost got scammed by an account that was dormant for a long time but had a lot of posts. Scammers love these accounts because they look legit to the buyer.

I also had my Facebook account hacked several months ago. I gave up trying to recover it because FB has the most useless recovery process possible. I also had my Linkedin hacked recently. In both those cases, I did not have the 2 factor set up. I hate this move towards phone requirements, but until someone creates a better alternative, this is the best we have. I just don't like cell phones.

I agree about the phones but damn it’s convenient for me.

Same thing happened to me last week at MLP forum. Same forum! Same scam. I changed my password and activated multi-factor. But they ripped someone off using my account.

Same happened to me at the TGP. Interestingly. I had the same credentials with only one other forum, myLespaulforum

Let me guess. Someone had a WTB thread?

Always watch out for this from the other end as well. I almost got scammed by a long time member whose account had been hacked.

A lot of us have been around the forums for so long now, with so many good transactions, it’s easy to let your guard down.

TGP is having a lot of issues too. I've been looking for a Suhr SE-100 head, and I had someone on The Gear Page with no recent activity (but who'd been a member for a long time) offer me one for a price almost too good to be true. It felt off, so I asked for one more picture with every other knob on the amp sent to 10 or 0, and then I never heard from them again.

After I get this resolved, I'm just deactivating my accounts on every forum other than here and TGP. They're the only places that I ever seem to buy/sell gear. For how little I visit other places, it's just not worth the potential headache.

The pic with the amp knobs on 10 is brilliant. I'm gonna request something like that every time.

Yeah it is. I've done similar. It forces the seller to take an up to date pic. I personally would ask for an updated pic all the time - outside of a very large handful of cool dudes here. Sorry to anyone here or anyone anywhere that this has happened too. All the more reason for 2F authentication.

EDIT: Sorry @thedimwitt if my (now deleted) comment offended you. I was not trying to imply that you were a hacker  I must have had you confused with someone else and was trying to get that persons attention - not you.

The Gear Page Hackers got me 3 times.
The hack had me selling a few high-priced guitars that I had to contact buyers that this was a hack.
The monitor was quick to get it straighten out.

If you ever see me selling stuff here it's not me. I'm not doing no 2 factor crap. I got rid of everything gear related I don't need already and only have what I do. I don't ever do online sales. For all of you guys who keep harassing me to sell you my 69 Twin the answer is NO, stop messaging me!!!!

Speaking of possible scams, this smells like one to me. I don't think there's much interest in this guitar, but it should be pointed out that the guitar in the 90210 episode does not match what this one looks like. Guitar for sale has 2 humbuckers while the one in the TV show has 3 single coils. Headstock in the video is the Fender shape, while the Ebay one is a different kind of Blade shape. Type in "90210 pawn shop" and this episode will come up.
