So many amps in the classifieds I wanna buy right now for top dollar , let’s change it up best amp under a grand . Let’s hear it !
Mesa Boogie TransAtlantic TA-30

Peavey 5150 2x12 combo
Mesa Fillmore 25 combo
Fender Deluxe Reverb
Orange OR15
Peavey Delta Blues 1x15

All picked up since 2020 for under $1k, can still be had for around that, and I've had a blast playing each of them.
How do you like the 5150 combo?

Have you done any mods to your Origins?

I finished the drop-in replacement board mod ro my Origin 50 a few weeks ago. That took it from JTM territory to JCM800 with a few extra features. Sounds really good to my ears. Even with having to buy a donor amp and the board being $150 I only put about $650 (not including tax & shipping) total into it. And I have the original board intact if I ever want to put it back to stock.

Peavey 5150/6505, best amp for metal
Corrected that for you. Maybe not THE best but damn if it isn't one of the more straight forward/instant gratification amps out there. I prefer a Mesa Mark over this but if I had 1k to buy an amp and only 1k it would be a Peavey and then use the rest on a used cab and boost

My new favorite, PRS Archon 50 MKII. Under $1k new.
Interesting. The Archon seems like a sleeper amp. I don't think I've ever tried one but your endorsement of it has my interest peaked. I don't really know much about those.

Did you use the Evolve drop in? Alex Catlow helped me tremendously with a modded 800 I did as a gift to a friend that had his amps stolen. I regretted giving that amp away. What him and Jas have done with the origin should land them a cut on their sales.

One question, how are the volumes? I've heard that these are a bit quieter than their 800/plexi 50 watt counterparts

Yeah I did the the Evolve drop in board that Alex/Jason designed.

I wouldn't call it quieter. It's a full fledged 50 watt amp that can get as loud as one would expect. Any perceived volume difference I would attribute to the distortion type. Preamp on the Evolve board vs some phase inverter/power amp distortion on the 800/plexi counterpart. In that aspect it's pretty insignificant.

One place I will note a noticeable volume difference on the Evolve board is when you kick on the diode clipping. This might be where what you heard about volume differences is coming from. It's usually a good 1.5-2 numbers up on the MV dial to make up for the diode clipping volume drop. For instance, if I have the MV on 4 without diode clipping I have to bump it up to 5.5-6 to get the same volume with it on.

Lots of love for the 5150 platform, many variations, and I have to agree. It gets you 90%+ of the sound from amps that cost 2-3X more.

Not the cr for me but definitely the 40c.

I think the older DSL sound a lot better than the newer ones.... but for a grand you can get a brand new engl powerball with a Z9 or a 50w artist from MF/GC right now
