Steve Stevens rig rundown

For sure he is. Again, I wasn't talking success, I wasn't talking song writing, I was merely agreeing with one other poster here that he isn't iconic in the sense of the leads he has written outside of the Top Gun sound track. but he does have great tone, great sense of rythm, and is a total pro. Probably easy to work with and without ego either which is what made him popular as a session guy too.
I gotta disagree. I still hear Billy Idol tunes on random radio stations to this day, and my kids know his popular songs. I think Steve was a great writer, if you can name a song by the first riff, you have to be doing something right.

Yes, his look is certainly something lol.. he's quite an established player for an old Gilf.
Here’s some funny shit for you.... last Summer a good friend who’s fairly well know in the surf and action sport World and is a music freak is sitting with us having beers and bullshitting about killer bands and Rebel Yell comes on. He tells us about being a teenager and seeing an early Billy Idol show outside of Santa Cruz, about one of those locking eyes with someone on stage moments. This time it was the “ hot chick guitar player” in Idols band. I look at our other friend, eyebrows raised, chuckle and tell him go on....he said it was just one of the things that stuck with him his entire life ( mid 50’s guy now), this rad chick who was a ripping guitar player, felt like a connnection was made. With the help of an iPhone and the glorious internet I pull up an old Hamer ad from that era, show it to him and ask “is that her?” with an extra helping of sincerity... he says “holy shit, that’s her!” I started laughing so F’ing hard, and told him that chick is a dude, that’s Steve Stevens 😂 Poor guy was in disbelief, I just burst a 40 year spank bubble and watched the blood drain out of his face. We’ve gotten a ton of mileage out of this one. Funny, the guy has spent his life and career surrounded by gorgeous women, and this was the one that broke him hahahah.

Hilarious.. people have a hard time reading here. The original point was not about is songwriting or rythm playing which is tops and fantastic, it was about his lead playing and it not being that stand out. I'd agree with that, though he always played and plays for the song. But does he come to mind when I think of a 6 string slinging solo stud? No. So we really aren't disagreeing because I even stated what you said in my comment that you replied to. LEAD playing people. LEAD playing. Iconic where his LEAD playing is concerned. Hope that's clear and yes I am being a jag-aff. :D

Oh man that's classic... if he's into Milfs and Gilfs "She" might still pass!

I prefer guitar players that don't treat music like a science.

It's cool he's honed his sound and playing but you are not going to be the next Jimi Hendrix like that.

Great player.
Problem with guys like him is, let it go already. That look is from another era. The black nail polish, the spike in his lip, the jet black hair. Grow the fuck up. Embrace your age and move on.

I agree but remember he was from the punk era not the 80's hair metal era.

100% you can still look like an aging rocker without all that shit on.

Here is what he’s recorded as a session guy:

hey man, you're allowed to have an opinion, no shade.

he gets great tones, his SS V1 kills, and no doubt he can play.
but i’m with Carl about SS needing to let go of the creepy black nails, pirate shirts and Cher wig shtick.

kinda like seeing trailer trash grandma in a tube top and spandex relic’ed by decades of cigs, speed and way too much sun.
