The radio stations overplaying it became obsolete & people actually want to hear it sometimes.
That what I was trying to tell you back in the day .the media pushed hip hop and rap and no new bands . My students do not know any new rock bands EVER . Just hip hop and old bands their patents show them . It really comes down to the mainstream media doesn’t show them rock . When stranger things had Master of Puppets all my students thought it was a cool new band and every one wanted to learn it . That proved my point . If they are show new rock as an option they would . Sleep Tokem has broken through so there’s hope somewhat for the kidsi cant believe younger people would want to play music of their generation that has meaning to them and not their grandparentsi bet these cock suckers never even heard Diver Down
Dude, why you do me like that lol? Where I am if you aren't playing in a tribute, you are playing either the aforementioned 'standard party easy to play set' or you pay to play 40min sets with 6 other bands on a Sunday night to familyI hate jam bands, neo funk, and grateful dead tributes. All tributes suck actually but there is a lot of that junk here too. I call jam bands go-nowhere music. The same people who criticize blues for being three chords then go play two chord songs with no lyrics in them.![]()
I would rather scrub plates than deal with any of that stuff. If you are happy with the situation then that's all that matters but I decided a long time ago that the pay and benefits of playing music are so bad I might as well just play the stuff I like and not give a shit about anything else.Dude, why you do me like that lol? I play every day but I still enjoy rocking out in front of an audience semi regularly. My choices are pretty much a classic rock tribute (Sublime, Zep, AC/DC or Dead are your safest choices) or do the blues thing. I can see myself greybearding "Stormy Monday" to drunks at a dive bar at some point, but for now I'm happy to be able to do what I do.I would rather scrub plates than deal with any of that stuff. I understand where you are coming from, and truthfully if you are getting $150-250 per man that ain't too bad. A lot of the pay around here is similar. Everyone does three piece bands for the economics but I reject that too cause I especially hate three piece blues bands so I always got at least one other guitarist. The only time I make more than $200 a night is at private parties or weddings. 3hr set at the local Irish pub is a bar tab and $150-250 each. I can't imagine needing to make a living playing the guitar.
Crazy how the money is so nonexistent. On average it's 1 to 2hrs round trip drive, lugging head, 4x12, board, attenuator box, multiple guitars, a million cables--having a good PA helps bring in some cool/odd gigs but that makes load in/setup x4. You better love it.I understand where you are coming from, and truthfully if you are getting $150-250 per man that ain't too bad. A lot of the pay around here is similar. Actually post covid a bunch of bands around here just started raising their rates, myself included. I also won't make more than an hour and fifteen minute drive for a gig unless the money is there. I ditched the head/cab arrangements a long time ago. Too much hassle especially downtown. Most decent gigs here provide p.a and a soundman. But there is still plenty of bs to deal with yet so heck yeah you do gotta love it.Crazy how the money is so nonexistent. I came to this realization a decade ago. Sold my bad ass PA for Pennies on the dollar because it was analog and heavy and nobody wants analog or heavy anymore. Funny how the pay really hasn’t changed since the 80s. In the end the titties and free beer just wasn’t worth it. At least for a cover band.Crazy how the money is so nonexistent.
