I was just watching the latest episode of Tone Talk on YouTube. Dave Friedman said he's not a fan of Nuno and could never understand the hype about him. Does anyone know if there is more to the story?

Starts at the 13:30 mark,

I kinda agree with Dave ... I don't like extreme. The fact their big song is an acoustic ballad says it all for me. But I do think Nuno is an amazing player... but I don't hear anything overly unique in his playing .. so I can't tell it's him playing just by hearing a few notes like I can with guys like Lynch, Jake, Warren, Eddie, Randy etc .. I've owned 3 of their albums at various points trying to like them but nah there's nothing there for me

I mean the Rise solo everyone went mad over to me sounded "ugly"

It was just acrobatics. i haven’t cared to listen to it since it first came out. There’s an initial, wow, cool trick but it didn’t evoke anything emotionally. I can get where Dave is coming from but at a tribute show like the Sabbath/Ozzy thing, the fact he could play it all, very closely to the original notes, was pulling it through, when other things were not quite right or shaky, due to not much rehearsal for anybody.
Plus he seems like such a good hearted dude, it’s hard not to like him and his passion for music.

oh absolutely he was outstanding at the gig .. MVP for sure ... well actually for me Ozzy was the MVP because I think everyone was expecting a train wreck from Oz and he slayed it (imo)

Wow, odd take for a guy that's around upper echelon players all the time. Not a fan of the band is one thing and I get that. Lots of people struggle with Extreme and there's alot of stuff of theirs I'm not that big of fan. Not a fan of a particular style and I get that as well, plenty of players out there where I don't like their style. But to not be able to acknowledge Nuno's brilliance, again odd take or it's personal. I mean for me take Malmsteen, I'm not a fan of that style but for me to say I don't get it? He's a master at guitar and what he does. I don't have to like it to respect him as a plyer.

The "feel" comment, I mean that's one of Nuno's biggest strengths. To me Nuno is the offspring of three players - EVH, Randy and Brian May. He's inherited his tapping chops, phrasing from EVH, his solo compositional skills, and slight classical lines here or there from Randy and his note choices and phrasing as well from Brian May. He combined all of that along with his staccato ability to create himself. For me, the moment I hear a Nuno solo, I know it's him. Even playing Randy or Jake's stuff nearly note for note, it was still Nuno.

Sharon and Kelly look like walking skeletons at this point. Surgeries and Ozempic do a skeleton make..

Also call me crazy but I much prefer Sabbath with Dio.
Your not crazy. I'll say it, I hated Black Sabbath and I hated Ozzy's voice.

Sure I may have been indirectly influenced by something of theirs where I picked it up from other players or artists but growing up, hated them. To this day, do not own one album of theirs.

I only got into Ozzy for one reason, Randy. And I stayed with Ozzy because of Brad, Jake and for a bit Zakk. My biggest direct education of Sabbath was from Speak of the Devil and Brad who kicked ass on that stuff.

So yeah, Dio era, I actually listened to that stuff. In fact I despise Sharon and Ozzy to be frank. Two of the most greedy people that's ever been in a business run by greed.

Yeah, the feel comment blew my mind. I'm not sure if there's another player with the level of feel that Nuno has.

Dave sometimes has odd takes on various things. Maybe because Nuno didn't want a designer amp from Dave it has left a stain. I can't think of any other reason not to like a guy like Nuno if you are blowing your load over guys like EVH, Lynch, Sykes etc... maybe his tone is thin and piercing ok, but his right hand and those chunky funky rythms with leads that are almost perfect every time? He's top tier and extremely special.

Yep. I remember when Blizzard of Ozz was released and right off the bat no way was I wasting my money on that because I hated Ozzy. My good friend who had moved to Florida kept saying, you gotta hear this record. Went for a visit, picked up at the airport by my friend and the first song that came on the radio was Crazy Train, he was this is it etc... Randy blew my mind. That album changed me as a player - it'd be 25 years before I ever shared the stage with another guitarist because of that record. The only thing I'll ever thank Ozzy for is introducing the world to Randy Rhoads.

Outside of the fact that I grew up on and loved Black Sabbath I agree with everything you said.

Yeah, I don't get Dave's take? I was never a fan of Extreme's music, but I'll acknowledge that Nuno is a heck of a guitar player. It's pretty obvious.

Nuno is a top of the top guitarist of all time. There is so many songs/albums and more than enough videos to back that up.

He is also a great song writer. Also, he's a really friendly guy when he's not super under the gun.

I think it is also a mindset thing. Extreme was never a huge act so when Nuno plays and talks about other players, he approaches it from the perspective of a fan first. He loves all the greats and gets excited about what they do. He isn't a diva like a YJM might be or even Schenker to an extent who always talks about himself as being different than the others. ( which he is but it's the way they talk about themselves)

I think some bands have a guitarist that is the focus on the band surrounds that or a band is the focus and the guitarist is not always the focus. Extreme was a good example of that. Bands like Tesla, Scorpions, Skid Row, etc. had killer solos and amazing guitarists but they didn't lead the ship like Blackmore, EVH, and others. Nuno had some amazing solos but he played to the song a lot of times.
