Pickup help

Surprisingly, even though I'm a DiMarzio fanboi, my Warmoth has a JB/59 combo with a mini switch that taps both at the same time, and that combo, tapped, in the middle position, is a great clean tone. It's not a Strat, but very very clear and I love playing on it when rolling the volume back. I had Eric Johnson Custom DiMarzios in a LP copy once and really like them, but they're a fairly low output. Maybe a PAF Pro? That's the pickup designed for when racks ruled the world, and maybe some dudes used those with their signature 80s LA studio sound? I'd see what Lukather, Huff, Landau, and them dudes were using in the 80s, that might get you a cool sound, even without all the rack gear.

I had trouble finding a good pickup for swamp ash guitars before. I had an Ibanez and went through about 6 pickups before selling it. Then I had a Caparison Horus with an ash body and tried a few that were ok, then on a whim I put a Tom Anderson H2+ in it and it just sings. Sounds amazing.

I’d recommend trying the Tom Anderson H2+ for mid-gain and H3 or H3+ if you want more gain. Those pickups sounds amazing and you can find them used around $90, new I think is $120

Basically the moral of the story is anything is better than a pos jb…lol… I hate that pup….

Open, natural, uncompressed - these are words that come to mind when I think of my Planet Tone humbuckers.

My DiMarzios, like others have mentioned, are the furthest from "let's the guitar itself shine", I enjoy them a lot but they definitely sound like the pickups more than the guitar if that makes sense.

I have gotten to play several of their sets. One of my favorites are the pound cake.

They use A2 and have this fun, buttery and crispy tone to them.

Ash+maple guitars are actually my fav to put JBs in lol
I have heard clips…especially evh clips with jb’s that sound absolutely killer but every guitar that I have had with a jb sounds like dogshit. Always bolt ons though. I have never tried a jb in a les Paul though.

Personally, I would keep the JB but the OP mentioned he is not a fan. I can wholeheartedly suggest the Duncan Whole Lotta Humbucker set for that guitar.
