Ultimate sin tuning….

So I have been on a jake kick the past couple days and decided to learn bark at the moon and the ultimate sin. After starting with the bark at the moon I realized why I never bothered learning it. The finger positioning is retarded. I’m thinking no fucking way he was playing that song like that. Then I noticed ben eller’s video on YouTube and it clicked. I have even went so far as to make it even easier to play. The one guitar player in the audience might realize you’re not playing it correctly but fuck him-he’s in the audience. Anyway it sounds good bwah. Now I had an epiphany on the ultimate sin. Drop d…. Boom 💥… thank me after you try it. I’m probably late to the party and it’s supposed to be played in drop d but everything I see says standard basically. That song in drop D versus standard is heavy as fuck yo….anyone else notice this?
 
The title track on Ultimate Sin is definitely in drop C# (I know because I've been messing around with it recently). Shot in the Dark is a cluster since the E and A strings are tuned up a half step while the rest of the guitar is a half step down.

My explorer is in drop c or c # so that is why it sounds so good.😊 that big open d at the beginning just tickles me in my nickers…..
 
Love our creepy surveillence tech. Went on YouTube to check something about Shot in the Dark and later on fired up Pandora on the TV and even though it’s set to Bad Company radio, SITD is the first song it played. 😞

Shit, I got that beat. Walking out of Kroger to my truck a few days ago I started singing Electric Boys. I get in my truck and the song started on Hair Nation...from the beginning. Just HOW good is this said surveillance tech? :shocked:
 
I have been on a huge jake kick as well. The song, The Ultimate Sin, is so freaking heavy! I generally resist alternate tunings, but i may have to buy another guitar for that purpose :)

With that and Shot in the Dark there is the Jake way to play and the Zakk way. I take from both to find my own way.

Ultimate Sin might be the first drop tuning Ozzy tune. That's definitely the proper way to play that one. Jake hits those big five-string power chords, that's the secret.
 
I wasn't aware the tuning was so fucky but that explains the heavy chewiness on that one. As for bark, I try to play it Jake's way as let's be honest, it's genius! The other ways sound good but they don't sound AS good as the stretch and the chord approach he took to his leads. But yeah, he stretches to make that happen, it's a challenge.

When I say off I’m talking about the tabs online. Maybe it’s not… just seems like some really odd finger positions that are not necessary. But then again I’m no Jake or zakk either. I’m an old retired prison guard who’s left side has no feeling at all and three fingers on my fretting hand are numb as well. So in other words I like easy. I don’t play guitar…I beat on it….🤪😂

That’s why I never learned it back in the day…just couldn’t wrap my head around it much less hit the stretch… my Gibson scale guitars help me a lot….

There's no winning with it. Play it Jake's way you've got that huge stretch, play it Zakk's way you've got some string skipping action happening.
 
I’ve been playing Shot in the Dark without any tuning adjustments for decades. Sounds just fine

Zakk has always played it in straight tuning. Jake plays it with the bottom two strings up a whole step. The songs in B and the way Jake tunes you can pedal off the open 5th string. I think it's only on the main riff you can actually hear a difference, Zakk's way is more straightforward metal, Jake's has a little more tension.
 
Jake loves the upper strings for his riffs..if that makes sense? I have not noticed a lot of straight grrrchuggachugga’s on the bottom two or three strings like most other players… lots of odd chord positions on the higher strings and hits those big open chords also… timing is impeccable also….
