The first three are pretty easy

Sabbath
Maiden
Metallica.

All ended creating a genre and varying levels of commercial appeal, and brought new fans in. Keeping that in mind… the 4th spot should go to…

I think you gotta throw Yngwie in there for creating and/or helping inspire neo-classical/power metal/harmonic minor shred metal
 
Metal is so much bigger than 4 presidents. Band synergy is not individualistic.
And Sabbath didn’t really start anything that a grieving blues man of 1919 didn’t sing about.
That being said to even get started, “metal” would need a definition… and we all know that’s not happening.
Metal can be seen in all application…. The USMC ground infantry is pure METAL!!

When I was in middle and high-school I knew this dude that worshipped KISS and particularly Vinnie. It doesn't matter who you named, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Dio, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Page, Iommi, Hendrix, you name it, and he would tell you all the reasons KISS and their guitarists stomped their dicks in the dirt as a band or as players.

Some days he would even come to come with his eyes done like Ace or Vinnie.
