LP neck 'bucker of choice

So far the 57 classic has been far and away my favorite but right now I have a Seth bridge in there. Meh, them things are too damn bright no matter how I try to adjust them. I have a 490r I could try swapping in there but kinda feel like it'll be a waste of time. Sell me on something else that is similar, or in your opinion, better than a 57. Bonus points if it's a Dimarzio cause then I can get it in purple and gold. Probably still wind up with a 57 but I'd still be interested in your personal choices especially if you are playing blues or rock on your Paul.

Right now I am using the Suhr Thornbucker, not the +, the regular one.

It might be exactly what you are looking for.

I hate four conductor wiring and the web page describes it as "PAF-type". The Seths are PAF like, supposedly, and sound excessively bright. If I dial back treble in the EQ they still seem thin and too crystalline in the highs. I think I hate PAFs.

I was never a fan of the Duncan 57 in the neck psotion, always thought it was a little dull sounding. The Thornbucker strikes a nice balance, not bright or muddy.

I also use an R&S Super Pot, it's nice and clear when I roll the volume down.

I lower it in the ring and then raise the pole pieces. Probably not the best neck pickup ever, but it does sound nice for rhythms and there is no lack of clarity.

36th Anniversary PAF
How PAF like is it? I think I hate PAFs.

The new Gibson Custombucker (best Gibson PAFs I’ve ever tried) and the Wagner Crossroads are what I settled on in mine. I like chime and clarity out of my neck p/u

How PAF-like are they? Seths are supposed to be a premium PAF type pickup and I think they are mediocre and rather shrill in the highs, which makes me think I just hate PAFs.

You can always email Jeff at High Order Pickups, he can make you what ever you want.

He is very good at knowing what you would need to get where you are going and it's not very expensive, you may have to wait though.

I’m not a fan of the Lover in a LP neck spot either—strangely I do like the Antiquity there tho. Like I said I like em underwound (bright)—the Crossroads has more meat to it than the CB

Dunno, never thought I'd like anything with PAF in the name as I equated them with weak, thin pickups. The 36th Anny in the neck of my Les Paul is the first pickup that made me want to actually play a neck position pickup on purpose, for a rhythm part. I usually just used neck pickups for leads from time to time. I also put a neck and bridge set in my Warrior I rewired. I LOVE the 36th Anniversary PAF. I also put a PAF Pro in the neck of the scalloped guitar I bought several months ago and love it too.

If I were ever going to have a custom pickup made, I'd probably have Larry just build me a 36th Anniversary with maybe a tweak or two to make it my own. That pickup is basically the reason I seem like I suck DiMarzios off in my posts where I jest about dubbel kreems and how Larry is the best winder in the world.
