LP neck 'bucker of choice

Gibson 61R and Brandonwound 59’ clone. Both are clear with no neck “mud”. Custombucker is a close 3rd.

SD Pearly Gates and Jim Wagner Darkburst have been my two favorites so far. Might honestly prefer the Pearly Gates a bit. Would be curious to try a Custombucker or Lollar Imperial Low Wind though since I really only use the neck pickup for the occasional clean or edge of breakup parts and I like those really low output scooped tones

Bro, try the DiMarzio Air Norton (DP193) or the Air Zone (DP192) or the Liquifire (DP227). They're amazing....big sounding, warm, but not muddy. Great definition, but no high end screech.

Same here. The Pearly Gates neck is amazing.

I just recently put a PG in my R9 and it’s my favorite neck pickup out of many, many others I’ve tried. So clear and almost single coil-like.

Have you played the Duncan Jazz neck model? That's been my favorite for decades, but I've always heard great things about the Pearly Gates. I wonder how those two pickups compare.

Tough choice man.... The Blues Heritage neck pickup in my LP is a monster and is is Alnico V, which does still work and sounds great, but as you saw in my other post, I am toying with the idea of trying another Blues Heritage with alnico IVs.

A2s are nice and snappy in the neck of a LP as well.

I know you didn't ask about magnets, but it has helped me narrow down/shape my pickup search of late.

Sounded kinda like a single coil in this demo which isn't my bag at all.

Fair enough. Fwiw that clear chime and thwack on the lows clean is what sold me, and it maintains excellent dynamics with gain. There's plenty of balls and cut on tap when you rev it up. It has an almost Strat like rod magnet SC sweetness on the cleans, but with an undercurrent of LP Humbucker beef still there.

Did you check out vid and clips on their site?

I'm playing a Twin so clear chime isn't something I need out of a pickup. As soon as I hear "strat-like" I know it's not for me. I played strats for about 20 years, if I wanted a single coil type tone I would get another strat but those days are long gone. Looking for a nice, fat n rich but still clear humbucker. The seth I have in there now has an element of single coil and it's why I hate it. Shrillness in the highs. If I was using a tweed twin or something woolier the seth or tv jones would probably work better.

I'm playing a Hiwatt usually with a Treble Booster, so while it's loud, clear, and chimey like a Twin there's always that bit of British midrange in there too which fattens up single coils nicely.

I put a Pearly Gates in the bridge of my LP std but have a Wildwood spec 59 in the neck. Everybody's different but i love that setup.
Good luck in your search VB!
