LP neck 'bucker of choice

I like the Wagner Crossroads or a Wolfe Dr Vintage.
But I have also used 36 anni, Duncan Jazz, Fralins, Burstbucker 1 and a few others that were good too.

I've come to really like the Classic 57 neck lately. Prior, in all my H-H guitars, I love the Schecter Super Rock II's in the neck, which were found on the MIK Schecter PT's for years. It's very clear without being thin and beafy without being boomy/woofy. I'm always looking for them on 'Verb.

I am eager to try the Slash 2.0 in my Trad Pro II. ...Don't like boomy neck pups, esp in a LP.

My R7 came with an MCP t-wreck which has really grown on me. It’s pretty dark especially for clean tones, but the lead sound is just fantastic.

Unfortunately they don’t seem to offer them now & I can’t find much info on them.

How would you compare the crossroads to the dr vintage?

Neck pickups have been such a crapshoot for me. I have a Strat with an old Duncan 59n and it sounds great. Every other time I’ve tried a Duncan 59n it sounded like crap. In my burst Lester I think I have one of the PAF protos that Scott made. It just worked where many others failed. But it’s always been hit or miss for me.

It just seems to be difficult to pair the right neck humbucker to each guitar.

So iow, I got nuthin except good luck!

OK, maybe try an A3 PAF type. A3 always comes across as more delicate and rarely too woofy. But it will probably need more winds than other PAF types.

I had a 59n in this Edwards when I got it. I was really excited cause they are so highly touted. It sounded sterile and flat through my rig. I was surprised at that. I actually liked the JB in the bridge better.

I bought a Chubtone with 59n and hate, hate, hated it. I ended up with a Sentient which just may be the perfect compromise between the 59n and Jazz. But I’ve never tried a PG neck. I need to at some point.

Another thing @VonBonfire ; when I got new pickups for a Gibson Explorer I asked Greg at Jalen pickups to make me a custom set. FuckinA did he deliver. Maybe hit him up. He’s easy to work with and reasonably priced.

I had a Sentient in my Viper when I bought it. The problem was there was too much foam on the bottom and I couldn't lower it enough to suit my taste. By the time I pulled it I had other pickups ready to go in so I never gave it a full rundown through my rig. I sold it and the Pegasus to recoup some cash.

That was the only guitar those two specific pickups worked for me. I ended up selling it to @LP Freak and if I recall he immediately put Aldriches in it and punted the Duncan’s. Just goes to show there are so many variables.

Thanks for this, I'm thinking about replacing the SD Jazz in my SG. I have a MCP Afwayu in the bridge which rules. The Jazz is alright, there's just a bit too much high treble for me. I might start looking around for a replacement.

I'm a big fan of the SD Alnico 2 Pro. Very warm cleans when rolled down, without being boomy or muddy.

Very similar.

I have a set of Wolfetone Dr Vintage/Marshallhead on deck to try. I just bought an R8 off Reverb. It's the best color I have seen from a recent Custom Shop LP. Its supposedly has Throbaks in it. Those better sound good or the double cream Wolfe's are going in. Don't tell Larry.

For me, this is also in conjunction with the amp I’m neck humbucking on through.
I remember, a MCP Custom Detroiter wind in a LP Silverburst being insanely good.
Pearly Gates was a decent gutter’ done.
WCR Darkburst was also killer.

Thats a sweet R8

The Dr V is rounder than the Crossroads, which has more punch. Dr V is Alnico II and the Crossroads Alnico V. The Crossroads is fantastic and probably my favourite neck pickup due to its clarity. It can handle drive really well.

I didn't realize the Dr Vintage was Alnico II. They should sound different. It's been a while since I have had a set installed.
