The actual conversions with PAF’s are getting stupid expensive. Black Magic Guitars has one listed now for $70k. Buying a stock one seems to be a better deal. And then doing the conversion. Although PAF’s are also really pricey these days.

It’s also hard on the conscience to convert an all original piece. Mine already had the tune on matic so I didn’t feel too bad about it.



Really great. He sent progress pics throughout the process.

I had asked him about doing some work to a 69’ LPC about 6 months ago but it sounded like he may have been having some health issues. He wasn’t taking work at the time. Hopefully he’s feeling better.

Saw the one with BlackMagic. I actually bought a white 1960' slab board Strat from them at the Amigo guitar show in Nashville earlier this year. It's all original but It's very close to needing the frets replaced. No idea on where to start for a good fret guy to do the job.
Black Magic always seems to have really cool vintage guitars. They even had a 58' V with a repaired/broken neck at that show.

The Black Standard. It's pretty much beat to death on the back. No clue what the pickup is in the neck but 500T in the bridge. Fantastic playing and sounding guitar. My number for 1 for I guess 20+ years at this point. Non of those other LP's can hold a candle to it.

I actually bought my 52 from John at Black Magic a couple years ago. He’s a nice guy to deal with. Drove up to San Jose and met him at his place. The guitar was completely as described and he also had the pickups I needed. He pulled out a shoe box full of PAF’s and let me pick which ones I wanted haha.

A 60’ Strat is killer. I’ve been close to going after a couple vintage Strats but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I’ll bet it’s amazing.

As for frets, it’s very hard to find someone trustworthy who does a good job. I finally landed at Eric’s guitar shop and have been very happy with them. They’ve done around 7 guitars for me in the past year or so. All are phenomenal. He does pretty high profile musician’s guitars as well.

There is only two guitars that I still wanna own at some point. One is a pre-CBS Custom Tele or Esquire and a Gretsch Duo Jet.

I have to give SBlue credit for helping me find my conversion. He is good at finding rare and vintage gear!

I have a '71 335 and the frets are gone, nearly unplayable. I've put off the search for a quality tech to do the work for years. Hard to know where to start and who to trust.

I've even thought about taking the wife to Nashville or wherever for a long weekend to drop it off. I'm in Dallas and I have to imagine there are quality techs in the area... just have to track them down.

Maybe find out who takes care of Jim Heath’s guitars (Reverend Horton Heat). He’s based in Dallas. But I would think Dallas would have a few good people for doing a refret? Gotta be a decent store or two who have a guy or gal they like.

I gotta say it’s my Strandberg. When I first got it I thought it was great for recording because it was accurate, consistent and versatile; but it didn’t have any “mojo”

But the more I play it, the more I I get familiar with it, and the more fun it is to play. I think it has officially knocked my trusty SG out of the number one spot.

Hell, I’m not usually picky about weight, but even with 7 strings it makes my SG feel like a bait anchor

This geetar, which I've posted and banged on about before, inviting peeps to identify it (I of course know exactly what it is).

Unfortunately it has a bump in the neck / fretboard around the 3rd -> 5th frets. Hopefully I can compensate at some point with a dress 'cause it's preventing the action from being lowered properly.
