How many remember this amp? I was helping a friend help his friend's father in law move out of his house. I saw this in the basement, on the floor behind some stuff. It caught my eye because up until that point I never new the history of Music Man. This amp was made to rival the Fender Twin Reverb, and it sounds amazing. This is one of the original models because it has the 12AX7 pre amp tube. The later model has a solid state preamp section. I just always assumed it was Ernie Ball Music Man.

That one was made from '74 to '79 and used 6CA7's in the power section. It sold for $545 which would be between $3500 and $3600 today.

Dumble used the power transformer from the HD-150 for some of his builds. #178 is God-like, and has a Marshall vibe.

They can cook some new production power tubes pretty quick.

You can find those with JBLs too, from time to time. Not sure about Altecs.

My HS band room had one. I used it for 'practice' with my first rock band in HS. The band director would let us in on the weekend. But, we had no singer so no gigs :ROFLMAO:

Sounded great with pedals from what I remember

Yup. I tried a couple back in the day. Loud and clean was NOT what I was after.

Lifting amps like that back then is probably why my back is f.u. today. And those B3s, and Ampeg 8x10.
Knowing what I know now.. I could make one work..but damn…fuck that…🤪😂

That amp still does have a solid state preamp. The single 12AX7 preamp tube is the phase inverter tube for the power tubes in the power section and has nothing to do with the preamp section.

I used one of the hd150 head and 2x12 cabinets with the massive port for a few years. Super clean amp but with a mesa v-twin and with the EV speakers it would knock down walls. It was so loud and heavy. The 2x12 with the EV speakers weighed more than a Marshall 4x12. I wish I had kept it. Was a great pedal platform.

These things are killer some of the best tones I've heard from these amps.
