One of the grooviest songs KISS did and just happens to have a face melter solo by Ace.

Some other Ace songs I really dig

And this total banger..

Thing is, how do we know what Ace REALLY played on. Seems to me they were able to get session guys to sound like a "better" Ace and cut solos when he was too ripped or hungover to do so. I thought the Elder was one such album where they used studio guys to fill in gaps. Remember, KISS was always a brand, a production, not really a band after the early years. That said, that solo does sound like the rudimentary simple shit Ace would do lol. Some of his solos really worked, this one is meh and showed his limitations as a player.

Agreed. It reminds me of early Venom in a sense, that they were trying to play something slightly above their level, and therefore sounding rough and sloppy because of it. I mean, IMO, Ace's best lead work are on songs like Deuce, Firehouse, Black Diamond and Shock Me. There, he works within his limitations, but the phrasing and idiosyncrasies are working well and they are solos that are memorable throughout.

I think it’s a lot more likely Ace played a solo when he was doing the lead vocal. Rudimentary or not I love the solo on this song. It has a fire to it that most technically proficient players will never be able to pull off because they don’t have that fire inside and they’re slaves to their practice regimen and auto pilot patterns.

We’re not judging music on technical ability again are we?

Took me long time to appreciate KISS having only heard radio songs. Lot of older friends and influences site them so I delved in and found some cool stuff I now love. Definitely not all. But I’m always just happy if I can get a few good songs from a band.

Call me crazy but you could probably substitute any Angus Young, Ace or Tony Iommi solo in any Acdc, Kiss or Sabbath song and it'd fit😂
