So I sent my 2203 build to our own @FourT6and2 for a Langner mod and it came out awesome!

I did make slight voicing changes to it by changing the treble cap from 500pf to 390pf and the slope resistor from 33k to 47k and it is now in the goldilocks area to my ears. I also added a Metro loop. This amp kicks ass!!!!

Nice playing dude!

That tone stack change is closer to what Langner did sometimes for more of a scooped sound (56K/250pF). That value is also found in older Marshalls, especially Bass circuits.

Here's another clip of your amp from when @Exo-metal and I were testing it.

Amp sounds :rawk:
First time I've seen those big-ass Solen coupling caps in a Marshall build.
What did you like about those caps in the og 2203 build vs the usual suspects ? ( Synergy / Sozo etc..)

They seem to contribute to a lower noise floor. Everytime I use Solens, the amps seem to have a broader frequency response and a more direct feel. This is merely my anecdotal observation.

It’s interesting what changing the slope resister value can do. I just went the other way on my 2204 JMP (56 back to 33). I had some general maintenance done too, but that was the only value change. The amp definitely sounds more present in the mids than before, which I like but I can see why others would prefer a different value depending on personal preference/music style etc.

That amp sounds great - congrats!

A stock 2203 sounds best to my ears with the stock 33k/470-500pf values. But with this mod, the mids were a bit too much. Just needed a little taming in the mids to get it where I wanted it. I love this amp because it feels really nice under the fingers and yet doesn't lose clarity. The initial note attack is very pleasing. Some high gain mods add too much "hash" on the initial attack that I find very annoying.

I much prefer this mod to an SLO or 5150. I have my main three sounds covered with the amps I've built:

Cleans and vintage overdrive with my Green JTM45/100 build, crunch and hard rock with my red 2203/2204 build, and now metal/high gain with the Langner mod build...
