    Recommend an LP neck pickup

I love the Suhr Aldrich pickups in my LP. I like a hot modern pickup, but I want the pups in a LP to sound like an LP The Aldrich balance this perfectly for me. I’d describe them as vintage warm, modern hot.

    Jose Mod Preamp Pedal

If you don't want tubes hanging off a pedal on the floor, the JHS @T pedal does a similar thing with solid state components.

    DIO: Dreamers Never Die

Yup, his solo was always my favorite on it. I think Yngwie cuts a good track here though.

Which album had the best guitar tone in the shred 80s days?

Wicked Sensation s/t for me. Lynch’s best tone with the SLO before he added the loop. George told me personally he liked the earlier SLO, which was before the loop. I modded a loop bypass switch in my SLO clone for that reason. Ratt‘s Invasion... is probably second. (Assuming EVH is off the...

    Mark IV vs JP2C

Man I miss my red stripe III. Played that amp for a really long time. The band I was in was really dynamic so I wanted something that did clean, crunch, and lead all well. Replaced it with a IV, which had better versatility, but the sizzle on the lead channel was never quite there. The presence...

Big Wreck guitarist Ian Thornley is worthy of your listening pleasure

About 5 years ago I kept hearing about this band, and couldn’t get into them. Then on a flight to India I had Spotify on shuffle, a woke up in a delirious state to the opening track for Ghosts. That drudgy Big Muff slow bend downtuned intro, then breaking into that bright Cornell-esque verse. A...

Fed Ex changing their insurance policy and it sucks!

I can vouch for Reverb’s insurance. Shipped a EBMM JP15. Thing walked at the shipping hub—crazy for $2400 guitar to just disappear. Reverb covered the sale no questions asked. All it took was a 10 minute text chat with the rep. Alternatively, dealing with UPS and Fedex claims for damaged...

    Motor City Pickups

I had a Suhr Aldrich in the Neck and a Afwayu in the bridge on a Custom Shop LP, and always felt the Afwayu was colder, more modern and hot, and just lacked the vibe of a LP. And they were horribly mismatched. Put a Suhr Aldrich bridge in to match, and haven’t looked back. Perfect mix of modern...

My story of Trace Davis and Voodoo Amps (spoiler, I'm not stoked)

What went on with Surreal? I had some exchanges with Jerry in 2008 on metroamp chasing Sykes tones and he was pretty helpful.

    Speaker between a 30 and EVM12-L

My Boogie MkV:35 usually plays through a EVM12L cab. In the day, it was a MkIII or MkIV and Boogie metal grill 4x12 with 2 EVMs and 2 C90s. Amazing. Sounded like a blanket was lifted off my V30 cab in prior. Today I swapped cabs on my MkV and Soldano SLO50 which has an Orange PC212 (v30...

    With all this MkIII talk...

I miss my MkIII red stripe. The presence knob on that thing was so versatile. Put it into EVM12Ls and weeee! Sold it for a MkIV since R2 never played nice due to volume issues and the shared EQ, and struggled to get a good clean and lead at the same time. As a 1 or maybe 2-channel amp, it was...

Do they make a decent rack mount multiple effects unit these days that doesn't have amp modeling?

G Major was the standard rack effects unit in the 2000s, save for anyone that could afford an Eventide (which I never saw in the club scene outside of pros). I remember struggling a bit with clipping on the GMajor but it was into a Boogie Mark III which doesn’t have a great loop. When I got an...

    Wes Borland killer live tone.

I remember back in around 2005, Wes touted a new band and there was a clip with drippy saturated high gain tone. Believe it was a Diezel amp. I don’t recall anything coming of that project, though? Not that I was following it closely though. Some have said he has jazz chops? Has he released...

    Dimarzio PAF Pros

Had one in a basswood HSS strat that I unloaded about 10 years ago. Was awesome in that. Pretty punchy bass, chewy high end. A bit of a scooped sound with a mid range notch in it somewhere to give punch. Cool sound—miss selling that guitar. Way better than a Duncan Custom I had in a bridge that...

    Afwayu vs Aldrich

I had an Aldrich in the neck and Afwayu in the bridge of a LP. Loved the Suhr neck's sweetness, but switching to the bridge Afwayu was a stark contrast. I remember it being boomy and overpowering overall. Maybe in a PRS or a Ibanez with a hotter neck for a high-gain metal situation only it would...
