I came in to say the same thing......

And also as Professor Mummery always said..... "adjust for inflation".

"You know how people always say my mom/dad got a house for cheap back in the day.....".........

Adjust for inflation and compare to the average price now and see if it really was cheap or a good deal.

Also, this stuff reminds me of my dad saying he should have held on to old cars that are now worth heaps. But yeah, so would I now, but we have to live and survive. Can’t hold on to everything for 70 years.

Would like to know what year this was so we can adjust for inflation - I imagine these prices are probably "good" but not insanely good after accounting for that.
Compared to now probably a better than decent deal or it really depends on state to state also but yeah wouldn't be surprised if it was a good deal or maybe an insane deal by some standards depending on state too or average of a state.......

Well this is in regards to houses but I imagine the guitars are in line or wouldn't he surprised if a better deal back then vs now.

You may also have to take imports into account and judge relative to that in terms of comparable quality like MIJ, MII or MIC or whatever else and in that case todays prices are probably way better in that sense but in either case I wouldn't be surprised that prices are better back then when adjusted for inflation when it comes to it being made domestically and in the States or a Gibson for Gibson comparison of then and now.

Yeah actually when you look at a 60s Gibson Standard now....... the price Gibson makes them for now adjusted for inflation is inline and a bit below inflation.....

Despite historical high inflation well below what a standard cost back in the day in 1960.

View attachment 397815

are the 60s standards made the same way as they were made when they first came out?

whats the difference between a non custom shop 60s standard and a custom shop 60s standard?

i dont know the answers, i just know that we are about to turn rig/talk into TGP with our gibson thread and i'm very excited about that.

dayum someone beat me to the ole inflation calculator i use, or got their to, womp womp, sorry as well

It is funny to me when people accuse Gibson of being priced crazy. You can get LP Standards for $2500 new, +/- a little depending on finishes, SG Standards are under 2K. American labour, etc. OR I can get some Indonesian or Korean built guitar for 2K. Frankly, at that price, the Korean and Indonesian guitars SHOULD be way better, knowing that the labour rate is so much lower. You should be able to spec that goddamn thing to the moon.

Agreed. Standards and whatnot are pretty reasonably priced in comparison to a lot of other guitars, even if their price has jumped 50% in the last few years. Feel like where things become ridiculous are in the limited, RI, vos, m2m, murphy, signature models, etc...

It’s not ridiculous if people pay it. We all have the option to say, no thanks.

I suppose what I mean is that there is not 2-20x worth of labor, parts, rare woods, or even "limited availability" in pretty much any one of those models. Not going to get into what people are willing to pay for something as I see many of these models sit for years unsold.
