Gibson 498T pickups: Close to an overwound PAF?

Basically the title, I've been rolling bridge pickups in my PRS singlecut and threw in the 498T that was just lying around. It is actually a pretty good match for the guitar as the PRS has a 53mm string spacing in the bridge position and the 498T is at around 52mm.

Soundcloud links to the 498T & #7. Sorry for the crap playing, I need to go and practice more obviously. IMO the 498T sounds pretty close to the stock #7 which is only around 8.1k in DCR but is pretty hot feeling for a PAF on its own right. The 498T rated at 14k would be the overwound version of that, you can hear it has less overtones and a more low mid / bass push to the sound.

The 498T gets a lot of crap and I can totally see why that would be, its too hot and muffled sounding for a PAF type pickup but not nearly as hot and tight as a true high output humbucker. Its just kinda awkwardly somewhere in between the categories, and it can sound a bit piercing & bloated at the same time.. but if you just take it for what it is, its a pretty good bridge humbucker. It pairs very well with a PAF style neck, the middle position has this really intense and bright quacky thing.

But this shows how similarly designed pickups can sound and feel extremely close, and maybe they don't make as big of a difference once settled in a certain style. I've once had the Polymath by BKP and took it out pretty fast as it was too dark for my singlecut, but yeah most PAF types seem to work great in my guitar. In the end I managed to put the stock pickups back in because the 498T was out of phase with the neck pickup and I couldn't bother to open it up and turn the magnet.

The signal chain is my guitar -> Friedman IR-X -> Audient ID4 -> Reaper for those who are interested. Tone Factor Greenback IRs on the Friedman, by far the best IR I've tried.

I've been interested in the Suhr Thornbuckers as of late, the #7 sounds great but they come with two conductor wires so you can't coil split them, I've heard great things for the Thornbuckers and was considering getting the and with the 6 way toggle switch for versatility. Its kinda weird having a PRS with only a 3way toggle but thats what these second run singlecuts are about I guess. Paul's version of a Les Paul.

I’m a fan of the 498t. Kinda like a marshall DSL - gets the job done honorably and hard to not have fun playing it. Won’t win any awards for most amazing tone of all time but that’s not always the point

I also own the new Vietnamese DSL100 and couldn't agree more. Its close to "that" sound but never it. You use it because it does work, and cannot bother to try out more stuff.

Wow, yes, truth.

I have tried these pickups out in the past and I like them. My new Les Paul Axcess came with them and I have to say, through my Soldano, they sound fantastic. Going to leave these in there! I soldered in a couple of treble bleeds and all good!

Currently pulling burstbucker pros for 498t/490r in my les paul. Great pickup with a bit more hair to them
I have a 490r in the neck of my Viper. It's a good sounding pickup. That should make a nice sounding set. They really cooked in the 333 I used to have, that was the factory set in that guitar. Lemme know how they work out for you PiggySmallz.

Bet it sounds dope, I like Vipers too. They are like a better SG sort of. Cheers man ^_^

I really like the guitar. Telecaster/Fender thickness SG. Great upper fret access, super comfortable heel. Jumbo stainless frets. Three piece neck i.e stable, ebony board, locking tuners, and a tone pros bridge. I did swap the pickups out cause it was kind of a metal guitar, and installed concentric vol/tone vol/tone so it's wired like a Gibson.

@The~Kid

Hope you have a great memorial day weekend bro!

I love the 498T, but I don't think it's got a PAF vibe at all.

To me, it comes across more like an underwound JB. Kinda very mid-forward and relatively hot, but not as mid-forward and hot as a JB.
The JB and 498T are both A5 magnets with the JB at 16k and the 498T at around 14k. The 498T is not low output itself by any stretch but I found it an improvement over a JB.

I have a '99 Les Paul Custom with the stock 490r/498t pickups, and it sounds damn good to me.
I tried an original Dirty Fingers, an MCP Afwayu, and a Suhr Aldridge in the bridge, and the stock 498t bridge was better.
I did rewire the guitar with quality 500k pots and some nos pio caps, but the 498t is a perfect match with that guitar.

500k pots in mine too. They make the 498T perfect. I hated what JB’s sound like with 500k pots.

Its weird because I also used to think that the 498T had a very pronounced honk, but after I changed the pots and added the tone knob back for whatever the reason is it doesnt sound as nasal? Its strange..

Pot values still 500k, I wired the tone knob out and decided it sounded a bit too shrill sometimes.

I like both, personally.

I do find the 498T has a "broader" freq response than the JB which is basically as mid-forward as a passive gets. But the 498T, like you said, is not low-output either, but it's not as hot as the JB.
