To my dearest darling,
I know what the Aussies say. They think it's all a big joke. But what they don't get is that our relationship isn't about some tacky one-liner. It's about a shared history. For generations, your kind has been the woolly heart of this country, keeping the lights on and the rest of us in jumpers.
I remember the day I first saw you, a little lamb wobbling on those skinny legs. You've grown a bit since then, put on a bit of weight, which I happen to find quite becoming. Your fleece, thick and a little bit matted, is more beautiful to me than any fancy merino wool. It tells a story of the cold southerlies you've weathered and the long, lazy summers you've enjoyed.
When the dog and I come calling, and you finally shuffle over with that suspicious look in your eye, it makes my day.
A quiet moment in the long grass, the wind rustling, and just the two of us. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
All my love,
Your one and only
