Crazy how influential Vai has been to me as a player throughout my journey.

I remember being really young, like too young to be doing what I am about to say, and I found a VHS called Alien Love Secrets.

I thought it was something for adults...

I put in the tape one night really late and hit play.

It was, in fact, NOT what I thought it was....

Then up on the screen comes the "Silver Man" I remembered seeing once some years before.

I never forgot the 'Silver Man' that I saw before - it was really trippy to me as a kid for some reason.

I was around 10(?)

Bad Horsie left such an imprint on my mind!

I also remember there was a VHS of SRV. All I could think and remember was that he had the largest nostrils I had possibly ever seen.

I always labeled SRV as "The Horse Man".

So, in that same memory bank, I have the 'Silver Man' playing his guitar like a Horsie and 'The Horse Man' playing his guitar.....with huge red nostrils - soaked in sweat.

As a kid I also thought - "That is what happens when you don't brush your teeth."

It would be some years later that I would come to appreciate SRV lol

i always wondered if he actually carried the guitar anywhere by that handle?

He’s definitely swung the guitars around the stage with them a whole bunch.

first time i saw him was at a 96’ G3 show, his tech at the time walked across the stage with a JEM in each hand by the handle and i thought it was the coolest fucking thing i’d seen yet. I actually use the handle quite a bit when picking it up, but that’s it really. Vai will even tell you it’s more aesthetic/being unique than anything practical.

Wow...Vai..Macalpine..Sheehan..Donati...and Weiner for good measure...spectacular collection of talent

My biggest regret in regard to getting rid of gear was a JEM mutt I got from Dave Weiner back in the late 90’s’; it was a floral JEM body Ibanez sprayed black that he found kicking around Vai’s studio paired with a floral JEM neck Weiner had. I wanted a 7-string so I ended up trading it for an RG7620 a year after I got it, but that thing sounded beastly and is the entire reason why I love Dimarzio PAF Pros so much.

No clue if Vai ever used the guitar for anything, but I do find it interesting that he’s had a few Floral JEM bodies reprayed without them stripping the floral fabric off first rather than just using a regular body Ibanez had kicking around.

Man that was a goof move for sure. Sold a unique, one of a kind instrument for a plain one you could get off someone for around $800.

Oof. That hurts.

Hell, I bought my newest RG7620 for $500.

Fortunately, I don’t beat myself over most of the shit I did before I was 20, or I’d never be able to stop beating myself up.

Amen to that! I definitely have my share of gear regrets that I do my best to forget.

My worst will likely be that guitar or the Mesa Studio Pre I sold for $125 because I didn’t know how to setup a fucking pre/poweramp back then.
I sold an amp due to being afraid of the cost to replace preamp tubes......

Was my first tube amp, and someone else, who I now realize was also quite ignorant, was warning me the tubes would go out soon and I would have to pay a tech to replace them, etc.

There was no noise or anything at all wrong with the amp. There was literally no reason to believe the tubes would have any issues soon.

I sold the unit based off of a completely unfounded worry and insane ignorance of basic tube amp things.

Not only that, it was a super easy tube swap anyway.

I have received so much stupid advice from other musicians in RL.

I could only imagine if I would have also been on gear forums listening to all the crazies. :P
