definitely a lot of channels guilty of “wow this sounds amazing” and I’m thinking “this sounds like you’ve spent 2 minutes with it and haven’t quite got to grips with it yet, it should sound much better…”.
But also; gear is better now than ever. It’s too easy to research and find what works...
2 new releases - ToneX Preset packs for a Marshall Jubilee 50W and Krank Revolution Series 1. Both amps captured direct and the presets include various IR's from my collection. The beauty of direct tone models is you can mix and match with any IR you like for unlimited flexibility...
Green crunch mode is very close to an 800 - my DSL100H and 1977 JMP
Red channel is more hot rodded plexi vibe. Supposedly the HR is dialled in a bit better than previous versions. I like Red 1 but Red 2 is overkill on the JCM2000 and 100H versions.
tbf, the actual Henson recording studios in LA are among the best on the planet and tons of incredible stuff has been made there. A favourite studio of a lot of the best rock and metal guys too.

Tim’s studio...
Ha yeah. I don’t personally like the master above 5. Sweet spot is between 1.5 and 5 for me, depending on how thicc I want the tone. Lower master is more modern and bitey sounding. higher is thicker and more old school
great amp, I have a 77 too. The settings in the photo are a pretty great place to start. I actually run the bass a little higher though. The MV is kind of like a tone knob. Use the preamp to adjust how much bright cap you want in the sound (and a pedal to boost if needed).
I’d recommend...
I sold my EVH after getting Neural DSP Gojira. I liked the amp but I just found that Gojira did everything I wanted from it. The Fractal emulation is also bang on, and even Audio Assault's version sounds pretty great (and costs like $2 on sale). Youll just want to use good IR's.
I also had an...
Tough to pick one, it’s like picking a favourite pedal/guitar/amp/cab. Having a couple with different responses is really handy, i’ll audition each quickly and pick whatever gives me the response I’m looking for.
The more hyped ones like the Suhr are a bit more fun to play IMO
My buddy Piotrek made a quick clip with the Rengob IR's using the Helix Mark IV (I guess dialled in to sound like his real Mark III). Love how aggressive this sounds.
These IR's are from a V30 4x12 Bogner cab from 2000, its a 1960B style enclosure with the insulation inside the cab. Really...
Yeah I love the heft you can get from the Royer mic's, its kind of smooth yet weighty.
A really great engineer friend of mine recommended the SE X1R ribbon mics, you can find them used for about £100 over here and they're really solid all round mics. I had their R1 mics before which were cool...
Thanks so much man!
I have to agree, I think the m201 is such a great mic too. Albini says its what an sm57 would sound like if it was a microphone. I remember the first time I used one, it was in another studio and I was micing guitars and for whatever reason, their 57 sounded like the most...
not sure how well suited it is for Dave’s classic circuits, it’s quite a busy amp compared to an older single channel Marshall. Would probably be a ton more work and still not sound quite right - again IMO it would be best to speak to him and tell him to do his take on it.
IMO the Green channel...
He probably knows the amp and circuit/mods well, probably best you start with having it serviced and get it working as it should first and foremost.
You could maybe look at upgrading any parts that are either low quality or prone to failure, and then see what he suggests. Probably helps to...
this thread is sort of reminding me why i’ve largely lost interest in listening to metal.
I really like Mastodon, Opeth and Gojira still, and I check Alice In Chain’s stuff even though it’s a little bit hit and miss (or filler). Sometimes i’ll play the older Killswitch or Chimaira albums for...

Just released this new pack. Marshall 1960A cabinet with 1984 16 ohm vented T75 speakers. All 4 speakers captured across the horizontal width...
You actually caught me on a good day - I'm just making IR's of a 1960A with 1984 T75's so it was easy for me to check this. The flat curve looks nothing like a cab impedance curve, you lose that resonant low bump as well as the presence peak. You may still like the sound of it though.
BTW...
OS slant for me. The angled part of the baffle usually sounds less phasey and stuffy under a mic to me. Straight slant is my favourite. Lot of time for Traditional cabs too.
The straight ones look cooler but I don’t think they record as well.
