I’ve looked into KT90 and they’re a good tube. As long as the PT can handle the extra heater current the impedances are good enough for guitar amps. They should sound great.
They don’t like massive screen voltages, most amps wouldn’t work with them - those would need to be ran in ultra linear pentode which removes most modern guitar amplifiers as they triode strap or run much too high screen voltages. They also pull dumb heater current.
Glad to see I’m not the only one thinking they would do best in a mix with something. I like the idea of Creamback G12M but I think I like the top end better with anniversaries. Mesa standard cabs tend to be on the darker side IMO, I wonder if that would be an ideal candidate?
That’s the exact stereo setup I used to run. A block letter and a 5150 II. Still have the 5150 II.
They do feel like home if you have the room to crank them up a bit. They just work. It’s hard to explain.
Sounds like a clearer, more solid low end V30 without the omnipresent mid character.
I really want a cabinet of these, a second cabinet with G12H30s, and a third regular G12M cabinet for sonic baseline.
I imagine a Mesa OS cabinet with these in it would sound absolutely killer.
Those ECC83S high gain models are the worst for it. Sonically it’s an unorganized gain sound they have that just sounds like wet cardboard rattling. I think designers have to design around the tube to utilize it to its fullest potential. I just can’t stand them at all.
It’s a mid shift not a mid scoop like a contour. It affects the bass frequencies as much as the mids.
Personally that’s a mod that’s perfect for anyone that things a 5150 is honky or the mids sit weird for their speakers. It’s helpful when you need more mids with greenbacks but less with V30s...
Like you I went down the authentic rack effect choice instead of an all in one box. I hate UI’s that much. I don’t want a laptop to configure anything. Just an outboard mixer and be done with it.
Can’t tell you how many times I had to turn my 4x12s backwards or towards the drummer so he could hear WTF I was playing to satisfy the quiet crowd. Many times I just had them crank the PA to compensate and that was enough to shut them up. Loudness is all about perception.
I’m in this camp. The wow factor of an amp and effects filling the room is nothing short of inspiring. Loud digital gain just isn’t the same or as dynamic.
