Well...not really, in my experience. I have played dozens of pedals that won't chug...at least not the way I want to hear them chug. Lots of pedals can get enough gain, but getting the right amount of high end without sounding brittle is often a challenge. Also, lots of them don't have enough...
It sounded great on my speakers :D
But your point is solid. A lot depends on the rest of the signal chain. I'll be running it through my Recto 2x12, which has tons of low end. I can't imagine it sounding thin through that, but we'll see.
If it's gotta be tube, the Mesa 2:90 is tough to beat in a 2u unit.
But today's modern Matrix power amps sound amazing. You're not giving anything up going with one of them.
Let me get this out of the way first - I'm a tone snob, like many of you here. I've owned a stable of boutique amps from all the big names, and also Marshalls modded by Dave Friedman, Mike Fortin, Voodoo, etc. I've played just about every dirt pedal made and rejected most of them as unworthy. I...
This place is cool.
I admit that I sometimes liked to watch people lose their friggen minds here on political threads, but deep down I know they were stressing themselves out. It's def better without that angle.
Dan, thanks for the gear pic, but you know we really want to see your short...
I've owned a Mesa Recto 2x12, Port City 2x12, Bogner OS 2x12, & and Avatar 2x12. The Recto beats them all, imo. It sounds as good as a great 4x12 with all the punch and low end you could want.
Congrats, man! I am also a Matrix fan.
I listened to both the GT800FX and GT1000FX amps before I bought, and while there was a difference, I found it to be small and not enough for me to worry about (because I can get my preamp to sound amazing with either one).
The GT800 can wail! The tones...
Thanks for the clarification  I'm an admitted Engl fanboy, but I totally understand when somebody has reliability issues with a brand. It's a bummer, and it would sour me as well.
My Steve Morse, Powerball II, & SE head and Screamer combo were all great with no issues, so I have a...
Great poll, Dan! I'm a big fan of both, but I gotta go Priest. I have played half a dozen Priest songs in bands over the years. Never played any Maiden on stage, but I love a ton of their stuff, too. They are both great!
Congrats!
I picked up a Steve Morse head back when they first came out. Great amp! I should have kept it, but I traded it (along with 10 other amps) for a 10,000w outdoor pro-level PA that I thought I really needed
A couple of things. First, it's from an established company well known for guitars, not amps. They don't have high profile players (are there even any high profile players anymore?) using the amp. Finally, Mark Tremonti has his own PRS sig amp, and it's an import at a VERY attractive price point...
Wow, bummer to hear about Steve K. His amp collection was truly drool-worthy.
I loved the 2 Fortin Diavlos that I had (I even gigged one of them). The Fortin love must have metastasized in order to replace Cameron in the thread meltdown hierarchy.
Thanks man!
