As I understand, it's more about the dealers' competition rather than Fenders, and the law against setting a minimum price is to allow customers to shop around for the best price.
I have one. It plays excellent. I didn't like the stock Tomahawk pickups, though. The bridge pickup was too bassy for my tastes. Switched to Dimarzio Titan bridge, 36th anniversary PAF, which covers the whole range of clean to high gain sounds I need.
The SD1 does cut a lot of bass. Not really my favorite, personally. The full-size Spark has 3 modes (fat/clean/mid) and added drive, bass, and treble controls, so you can set it up to be more or less transparent.
