I tried a Spidervalve recently and was able to get a bitchin' tone out of it. I wouldn't hesitate to use that live. Didn't make me want to sell my 5150 III, but I could definitely get VERY usable tones for a live situation.
I'm happier with my rig now than I've ever been so, I'll go with my current rig:
Amp: EVH 5150III into Bogner 4x12 with V30s
Guitars: EBMM Axis and 2 Peavey Wolfgangs
Effects/Pedals: G Major, Keeley TS9, MXR EVH Phase 90, MXR Flanger, Budda Wah, Behringer FCB1010

I opened for them about 5 or 6 years ago (just before they got the Black n Blue guy) and it was a whole night of this and worse. Jani and the bass player almost came to blows because his drunken stupidity. He "sang" about 5 songs in a row lying flat on his back, and by "sang" I mean he mumbled...

I guess everything sounds a little harsh compared to the XTC, which is SO darn smooth, LOL. I guess it's all in your frame of reference, as compared to my previous amps the 5150III doesn't sound harsh at all, maybe all my previous amps were just MORE harsh sounding!! In any event, I'm LOVING...
I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the Heritage G12Ms in a rear loaded cab with a grillcloth. I find the grillcloth seems to tame some highs and I seem to prefer rear loaded cabs in general. My old Legacy cab always sounded OK, but I prefered my rear loaded cabs more.
