The simple answer is to give Mesa a call, describe your problem and ask how much they'd charge... At which point you'd be able to decide whether it's worth it to you or not.
Rectifiers absolutely reward having a sledgehammer pick attack.
I've never been a fan of boosting Rectos. I can hear why some people prefer the sound, but for me it flattens the response out. One of the things I love about the Recto is how you can control the speed and response of the amp by...
Pure nickel 10-46 in standard on a Les Paul.
I used to prefer 11-50 but for some reason they sound dead on my main guitar while 10s sound awesome on it. No idea why...
I have an Orange 4x12 and think it sounds terrible with my Recto (harsh, piercing and flat). I know tone is subjective but I'm not sure how anyone can stand the way those two pair up.
Mesa 4x12 FTW.
Hendrix, BB King, Metallica, Led Zeppelin...
...Just to name a few that've done alright by recording their own renditions of other peoples music.
Not that I'm defending the cover... Just that its not exactly a new practice.
On topic...
It doesn't really matter whether downloading is...
I think it all comes down to individual tastes and a willingness to experiment.
On my amps EQ settings that work well for passives sound extremely dry, brittle and sterile with EMGs. I think a lot of guys leave it at that and never make the effort to try to dial in for the new pickups.
Sounds like user error.
I have a Mark V and it loves EMGs. So did my Mark III and Recto.
My main guitars are all loaded with alnico II pickups, so I get you on that front, but in no way does it default to shrill compression with EMGs. It doesn't even make sense... it's just a fucking pickup.
I haven't played a TA-15, but with other Mesas I find the differences between modes/channels work better when you have a bassist laying down a solid/consistent foundation. Keeps the shifts in the midrange without the dramatic shift in bottom end.
Altec 417-8H
Eminence MS-12
Celestion MC-90
Electro-Voice EVM-12L
The Altec's were the original speaker of choice for Mark Is. MS-12s were stock on Mark IIs (I forget what year they made the switch). If I remember correctly the MC-90 was available as a general upgrade while the EVM-12L was...
Mesa sprays their speakers down prior to installation (I read on another thread that he's bought a Recto Traditional). I've broken in a number of Mesa cabs and I don't find their tone shifts that much (relative to other V30 cabs I've broken in).
Myself, I plug them into my guitar amp and play...
I had an AD30 2x12 a few years back. I'm not familiar with most of the bands you mentioned. Link me a couple of youtube clips and I'll tell you if it'll do those sounds.
(Blink 182 is Dual Rectifiers. The AD30 won't do that sound, but there's no reason you couldn't play Blink 182 songs on it.)
I had a bunch when I was younger... I sold them because Boss wasn't a big deal and it was easy to get more. Most of them I don't miss but I do regret a few of them now... can't just walk into a store and buy a CE-2 anymore.
Les Paul + Dual Recto + Recto 4x12.
The Electra Dyne is starting to push the Recto out of the number one position. I keep switching back and forth... not sure which way this battle's going to go.
Mostly the Bugera's bug me because I value innovation. I try to go out of my way to support innovative companies and avoid buying from those that just rehash other people's ideas.
I don't actually give a shit about the whole Chinese made thing. If they designed and built their own amps then...
