AHB-1's are much more organic and responds to different types of wood whereas the 81 sounds the same no matter what guitar you put it in (the 81 sounds like a synth sampling a high gain guitar, just artificial). If I had a single humbucker guitar, I might try the AHB-1 bridge again.
The...
Although all of his signature amps could kill cows at 20 paces, I never heard a huge amount of gain in Eddie's sound. Sounds more like clever eq-ing with lots of highs (at least for the albums).
Speaking of classic modded amps, if I ever run into James Hetfield's stolen Jose Arredondo modded...
I have a semi-baritone (25.5 scale with d'addario baritone lite strings) Ibanez RG2550 Prestige basswood with a Duncan Distortion in the bridge, varied between B standard and Drop A (Pig Destroyer fan). Contrary to popular opinion, the Duncan Distortion is not just a JB with an oversized...
When I was shopping around for my used Ibanez Prestige, I went out of my way to get one without the holes on the backside of the neck. Just seems like a weak spot to me.
Seriously, what is that fuzz on "Take My Bones Away"? Whenever that comes up on winamp I get the urge to reach for my wallet but no one seems to know what pedal it is.
Yes. Also Sabbath. First four are unbelievably great. Everything Slayer touched from 83-86 was bulletproof, even the fake live album.
Tom Waits had a spectacular run from 83-04, all of it great. Real Gone was a serious bump in the road.
Black metal guys love them because of the chainsaw fizz ugliness. Same way that death/grindcore guys love those Ampeg ss 150's/Crate GTX130C/Randall Century/etc. The BV isn't Solid State but in the same way, it seems to be custom designed for a certain kind of purposefully ugly sound.
Best songs on the Use Your Illusion albums were penned by Izzy. Most rock and metal bands forget about that whole '2 guitarists interpreting the same riff differently at the same time' thing.
Thanks for the calculator. Looks like I'll be able to get the v12's to work with my xxx.
Whenever I try to solder, the house smells like bacon and my hands end up bandaged...
When I got the cab (lopo), it came stock with x2 16 ohm celestion vintage 30's.
Would it be possible to switch those out for a pair of Eminence Legend v12 8ohm (I don't think they make 16 ohm)? Look for used v1216?
Sorry if this has been done to death, I've never switched speakers.
Something like the Mockingbird Kerry King is playing in my avatar but with a few custom specs (hotter bridge pickup, wider string spacing, I hate kahlers).
Soundproof my house, get a modded marshall 800/mesa mk 2 or 3 of some sort, learn how to play guitar with a massive erection.
Adds a bit of weight to a band's sound without having to commit to changing the key (the singer might not be able to hit some notes if it's in E flat). Some songs just have a snappier energy in standard that just isn't there in E flat, maybe Dime was just trying to find a balance?
Megadeth...
I like my CM2 for a throaty, crunchy thrash/black metal tone, in front of my xxx. Yes, it can sound cold but usually when I pick it up I'm not in the mood for warmth.
What are GB variants? Greenbacks/WGS Green Berets? Keep in mind that this damned combo is 120 watts...
As far as new speakers, WGS Retro 30/ET65 impressed me. Maybe 2 Retro 30's in the Lopo, 2 ET65's in the combo? Anyone tried the Mesa C90 with a xxx/3120?
That's the reason I don't keep up with modern metal anymore: no riffs. Every single band is Q-flat tuning with EMG 81-equipped guitars into boost into 5150. I thought Messugah were boring in when I heard them in 1996, I didn't think people would build an entire genre around them.
Already got the MXR 10 band, and it helps a bit. I've noticed the thing with the volume knob on the Ultra channel. Weird.
The v30's might be adding their own bit of fizz. The WGS Retro 30's impressed me, anyone ever tried them with a XXX or 3120 (which my amp basically is at this point).
I've had this xxx combo since 2006 and have made all kinds of upgrades (EL34's, low output tube in v2). I also have a Lopo 212 extension cab with Celestion v30's (bought for my Engl Screamer head), so between the upgraded tubes and the cab my xxx sounds better than ever.
However, what I've...
