I tracked with one of the newer heads a couple months back on a friend's demo, studio had it on hand. Not a bad amp at all, sounded just as I expected a DSL to sound.
You used to see a lot of Cesar Diaz amps/mods around northern CA back in the day, he passed about 12 years ago IIRC. He was SRV and Clapton's amp tech for a while and Bob Dylan's guitarist before that. Made some great sounding amps.
One of my RG's has springs that used to ring like a mofo. I just cut some pieces of foam out a bit longer than the spring and pulled them through using a paperclip - problem solved.
Mesa Lonestar is worth a look. One of the best clean channels you'll ever find - the drive channel excels at low-to-mid-gain and can get pretty saturated on its own if you need it.
Check out the MXR Custom Comp - absolutely killer compressor at a great price point. Reminds me a lot of the Way Huge Saffron Squeeze that I wish I never sold.
Awesome job man! The Bogner sounds amazing through both cabs.
Surprised how good the Princeton sounds through the Recto cab, Vox through the Recto isn't bad either.
Wow, that's a beauty.
Agree with the valuation though, the Bunker-built USA Customs from the 90s with the tension-free necks can fetch in the 1500-2k range sometimes if they're in great condition, but those earlier 80s customs rarely get that high unless the paint job is really unique.
Out of all the styles you mentioned, everything except DT was essentially recorded on Plexi's to begin with. Assuming you're willing to pony up for a decent attenuator, I think the 1959's just a more fun amp to play. You can definitely get it into the higher gain range too with a pedal like the...
I picked up an EBMM wah the other day from Best Buy's website dirt cheap on clearance. It's an awesome pedal - built like a tank and has a great sweep that deals well with both lower and higher gain situations.
I kind of just bought it to play with, but I think I might trade out my Teese for it...
Lace Sensors or something in the same vein - regular Strat single coils are going to sound very different. The red and blue in particular are closer to PAF's in output/tone than they are to your standard strat pickup - the Red's push about 14-15k on their own.
I frequently see used Fender Prosonic and Supersonic heads drop in the $5-600 range in good condition, even at GC nowadays. Both are great heads with cascading gain stages that'll go from Fender clean into a decent mid-gain crunch with heavy sustain - should give you a nice change of pace from...
