I'm familiar with the obvious differences in controls and features, but what about the tone and build quality?

Anybody ever A/B these amps? What's different about the sound?

The new one's made in Vietnam, the old one was made in UK.

Some swear by the UK and say the one from Nam is a cheaper build, and some say its fine.

Depends on who you ask.

I'd go for an older made in UK myself, i've seen them in the $400 to $600 range.

I have the old UK version and love it. I have played the new version a few times at a local Sam Ash. It is a bit harsher voiced to my ears. That may be the cab is newer and it does not have the good preamp tubes.

Time will tell on reliability.

I've played the new one a few times and honestly I walked away thinking it was a horrible sounding POS. Sorry, just my opinion!

Remember new Marshall's are often biased harsh, a bias will sort it out.
As far as I can tell sound wise there is not much difference.

The UK made PCB is a thin as the Nam made. Components are identical. Just adjust bias as Neil said.

Had a '97 on my bench some weeks ago and the rear PCB almost fell apart (actually the loop-IC just fell out of it :D ) - saved me some time & work to fix it, but from a safety perspective with these mass manufactured cheap ass things: better buy new than used.

Yeah, speakers maybe needed broken in.

I tracked with one of the newer heads a couple months back on a friend's demo, studio had it on hand. Not a bad amp at all, sounded just as I expected a DSL to sound.
