I decided to try and fiddle with the preamp valves in this amp to try and get a little bit of a better sound, it does sound awesome though.
I replaced the V1 slot with a Marshall 12ax7. The ones in the preamp were labelled 12AX7-B, I don't understand the significance of the B part but I think...
Part of the reason I sold my 5150 II was for the reasons you're stating, if I were in your situation I would sell the 6505 and stick with the Ultra+ but that's just me, both are great amps.
Glgp80 said pretty much everything that needs to be said on that front, if, after fiddling with the 6505...
Actually it was the tone, I found all the tones that I was looking for within the simple parameters of the Jet City's controls, it just sounded more... alive than the Blackstar, they're both great amps and I actually had to go and A/B them twice, as well as a Cornford Roadhouse 30 before I made...
Thanks! What did you think of ACM? I may be going there next year, I've heard mixed reviews however. I'll also be applying to BIMM, Leeds etc as well as traditional universities.
So.. on friday I came out of my last exam of this year, Chemistry.. (yay!), spent three hours in the car driving to Guildford and back to pick up my Jet City JCA 100h.
This thing sounds great, except I feel I may need a new cab soon, my Marshall 1936 just isn't as nice as the other cabs I've...
Ah, thanks for the info.
I did say if they sound the same though. If I couldn't tell the difference between two different wattage versions of the same amp I'd go low. Then again, I'm a student.
I would totally go for the Mk II if it was within budget, the Roadhouse 30 is, at the reasonable price of only £600, the Jet City being £700, discounted to £550. The MK II is something like £1199.
:(
It did outshine it, in a way I wish I'd never played the Cornford, now my GAS is flaring up, the Jet City is fantastic, the Cornford is just a little nicer, unfortunately it's a single channel amp and I don't know if I could deal with that.
One of the sickest metal bands I've ever heard, heavier in many ways than all the bands that play in drop G. Proof that low tunings are -not- necessary for sounding heavy.
If you don't/haven't.. Do it.
I know my recommendation won't mean much to everyone here but I played the cheapest amp out of the Cornford range and it sounded incredible, the EQ was really responsive, it was responsive to my playing, great tone, rich harmonics, great dynamics.
If it weren't...
Hey man, thanks for the info.
I talked to Drew (Fastredponycar) about this ages ago, I think about my 5150, and he mentioned in one of his posts that I'd need to get a mod done, which I'm prepared to do, I know a good tech.
Drew said that kt66s are perfectly fine in this amp, but I'll get it...
On a floyded 25.5" scale guitar (Tokai ripoff of a Jackson Soloist/Dinky, great guitar)
For drop D I use 11-56 with a wound 3rd (not at the moment unfortunately)
For drop C i would use 12-60 with a wound 3rd.
I'm buying a new amp tomorrow, the Jet City JCA100. I felt like the choice between the Blackstar and the Jet City was like a swiss army knife vs a katana, plus they have a pretty decent returns policy if I change my mind.
I'm really thinking of putting some kt66s in, or modding for kt88s...
