I never liked the non plus 50 caliber. Think of the .50+ as a bigger studio .22 and you're on the right track. I prefer the EL84 over 6L6 model because it was a little spongier and had a cooler lead tone IMHO. The 6L6 one was harsher and more hollow sounding to me. If I was going for a metal...
