BFG mod update....
i changed out a few parts Brian suggested and man what a different sounding head i have on my hands! i still have two mods left to complete, but i'm waiting on the parts to come in (a day or two more). what i got so far is a JCM800 hot rodded crunch channel, with a...
i have to say...Brian at BFG is the man and he knows his stuff. very cool guy to deal with.
i did a couple things he suggested and the amp is sounding better already. got parts on the way to complete some more mods. will post some clips when it's all done.
i have a marshall JMD:1 head now, and a couple other odd pieces of gear, so i'm shooting for a slightly different tone with this head. the clean channel is nice, but the gain is a little on the nasty side. looking at the schematics, it looks like they borrowed from Mesa....but didn't finish...
i heard back from one guy who said that model head is crap shoot to get good tone. he suggested replacing the tubes, which i already did. his final advice: sell it.
luckily, i also got an email from BFG and he had some great mod ideas. i will be doing some mods following his advice, and if i...
i have an old Carvin X100B III that i would like to have modded. i don't want to spend a fortune on a head that ain't worth much, so i need some advice. is this head worth modding? i like the clean channel, but the distortion channel has some nasal midrange crap going on that i can't remove...
i'm thinking about gutting the gain section and doing something different, any suggestions? i may have to send this to some amp wizard that can mod it.
unfortunately it happens. back in the touring days, my guitars ended up in a big travel case in the back of the PA truck...which meant 100 degree summer heat in the southern states. it was then that i learned to repot pickups and do neck adjustments. we never got the point of having air...
leaving your guitar in a hot vehicle is a sure way to get microphonic pickups. you need to repot them. last time i repotted pickups i got some wax from Sally's beauty supply and melted it in a pot, after pulling off the black tape/material from the side of the pickup i then used a coat hanger...
until i get new pickups, i rewired my tone control to be a bass cut control. that helped.
i used to have bill lawrence pickups in a similar guitar and they sounded great...i forgot about those.
EMG's...i wasn't sure they would sure the issue, haven't tried them in any mahogany guitar.
Bare...
I have an Ibanez RGT42fm that is mahogany neck through, and i've tried a couple different humbuckers that sound good in other guitars, but in this guitar it's all bass and scooped mids. duncan distortion was too dark, PJ Marx were too thin. I haven't had much experience with mahogany guitars...
thanks for the kind words Orbis. i make a ton of presets by request, but the forum has slowed down to a crawl...so i haven't done much lately.
this particular preset is nice not only because it sounds good in a mix, but it feels great to play. it has a more amp-in-the-room sound and feel.
the innards were pristine clean....no mods. the pots were really dirty, so were the jacks. it appears i had two issues:
1) the effects loop jacks were filthy from non use and not letting much signal through. the same with the input jacks.
2) the inverter tube was weak/bad. i changed out all...
trade completed! i got the carpet covered X100b head with two 4-12" top slant cabinets. i parted with two of my least favorite guitars on the trade. value wise, it was a good fair trade to me.
when i tested the amp, it wasn't without some issues though. first the good stuff:
1) the clean...
