That statement always gets peoples' hackles up. ..Which is fine, I'm understanding and open to all the differing opinions. I can post a comparo clip & get literally polar opposite opinions on what people think sounds best, beauty is for sure in the eye of the beholder. That's why I at least...
I've used all the tube brands in my amps over the years and at the moment I have Mesa JJs in everything but the OG C+, which, is the one that sits the worst live.
That being said, when you reamp & level match, I've learned that tubes don't matter to the mic (quantitative). How the affect feels...
IMO & having tried umpteen of them in the band, I just think the OG Mark mids are not in the right frequency for live band work. You can move things around with the right GEQ / PEQ, if you can find one with the right EQ bands.
When recording it's much easier to get them to sit well in the mix...
I agree- for recording. That said I think the RI may be better live, will know pretty soon. OG C+ mids have always gone from "disappeared" to "honk" for me in too narrow of a space, played in a live mix.
I do know of a particularly good MkV 90w head for sale in a custom color if you're interested. I used to own it, now the Guitar Center by me has it.
That said, the HRG has way better tone & feels. (..but the V is a lot more versatile.)
Aaaand finally, the JP-2C comparo!
This one deserves some commentary. I've had 2 JPs previously and have always felt like the V and the JP are the best Marks for 7/8 string work due to the extra compression, even though the tone I felt was a bit flat compared to the OGs. I felt the same today...
Did you feel any difference in "push" in the room?
A while back I had a Helix into a Mesa D180 power amp and it was pretty good, but still (despite the Coliseum power section) didn't move air like a full amp. That said, into a recording you'd never know (with the right knob tweaking)
I've tried all the usual suspects as well as a good sampling of the cool kid suspects as well. While it's not necessarily my favorite for the bedroom, the OD1X is the secret weapon I always go back to for anything with the band.
Put this together, a reamp comparo of the orange vs. red channels, this time both boosted with my OD-1X.
Red channel full mix 0:00
Orange channel full mix 4:04
Red channel guitar only 8:09
Orange channel guitar only 12:13
Just for funsies, here's the album version recorded with my IIC+ KRG...
Pulled the RI chassis out for testing & inspection. Using the stock 6L6 the amp is running 491 plate volts, and the stock STR445 YELLOW are around 25 mA. (each color moves ~4-6 mA, they're not matched super tightly).
The amp has the same PT as the C+ DRG RI, VII and the new JP2Cs. When I had...
Pulled the RI chassis out for testing & inspection. In bold / tube using the stock 6L6 the amp is running 488 plate volts, and the stock STR445 YELLOW are around 28 mA. (each color moves ~6 mA). This is right in line with all other Rectos, they've been historically consistent here.
Played the Recto RI at band rehearsal today for the first time. And, for the first time, I had a Recto that held its own against a Marshall! So, I'm still very happy with this amp.
I was playing through my 2001 Recto Trad 4x12 which is a beast, and darker than my Marshall cabs. I ended up...
