Think this is bad? Go to the Marshall Amp forum. A couple of poor guys over there are scratching their heads and chasing their tails trying to figure out what pedals were used to get the gain Ed got on the first record. They were told many times that the studio mixing / mastering had everything...
What I found is that it doesn't really matter. V1 is most important and even in that spot, the difference between tubes is usually very subtle and not that big of deal. That said, I had some old JAN12AX7s that sounded a little better in V1 compared to new stock types.
You need a David Bray Line Out Box the connects to your speaker out and converts you speaker signal to a line level. That's what I use with my Superlead to feed effects and a Power amp.

I'm ok with up to 10mA spread. I put the highest and the lowest mA measurements together as one of the pairs with a quad. Always worked well for me with great results & tone.
I use V1. I just swap them in and check for microphonics, if they produce sound & if it sounds good. I have a plexi so I can test both sides of a 12ax7 with each channel.
Just use your amp; its the best tube tester you can have. It will tell no lies and test everything including how they SOUND. Just have a few fuses handy if a power tube is shorted.
Plus, you can match power tubes too if you can measure the bias current while testing.
I do this all the time...
I agree.
Being a tone chaser helps to keep being a musician interesting for me. Having great tone and being a decent player far outweighs being a vertuoso hotshot shred master with lousy tone. I see it all the time when I see local bands. Great tone goes along way, especially playing with a band.
I have an old dual sound that was once in my 1980 standard and thought it sounded awesome. I swapped it out for a 36th ann. for a more vintage sound but now I might put that old dual sound back in. It's old and just has the white, black and metal ground shielded wire. Double cream too.
Try a fresh battery. Also, unscrew the plug's outer case and try and get a good connection with the meter probes where the wires are soldered to the plug.
That's how my Superlead is. In the same room, some days it sounds like VH 1 and & I'm happy and other days it sounds terrible like I have worn tube(s) or something. The tone will be off and the gain just won't seem to be there. Very frustrating. I guess it has to with humidity, temperature, our...
1. I cant stretch my finger for a 6 fret stretch! been trying for 40 years, my hands are just to small no matter what.
2. Sweep picking. Even if I could, I probably wouldn't do it because it sounds cheesy IMO. I have done it by accident and thought it was cool though! LOL
