The only person who can answer that question is you.
No offense to the previous posters opinion, but the Axe has grown leaps and bounds since many people have played it.
My setup consists of the Axe II 2 QSC HPR122i's a Mesa Strategy 400 and a Splawn 4X12 loaded with GWS 75's and vin 30's X...
I am NOT a fanboy by any means, but the Axe beating here is pretty funny.
I play an Axe II now, have had an Ultra, but have not played a Kemper. I have listened to a Kemper and will not bad mouth it...they do sound pretty good. I will say the Fractal Axe II has relieved me of rver looking for...
Just my .03 cents, and I know you prefaced with "The key to the axe for me right now is..."
But, my experience is not soooo black and white as yours is. I am no Fractal fanboi but I am happy with the unit. I have played frfr, PA into 4X12's, both simultaneously, and have seen a few bands live...
I had a Splawn modded Marshall, a Mesa Mark III, a Fender Vibroclone and a Randall RGP 1000 preamp 2 4X12's 2 1X12's Lexicon FX Rocktron EQ's Furman EQ's Pedal drawer...etc etc. etc.... 24 rack space (full of stuff)Sound Scupture Switchblade GL, Footcontrollers yadda yadda yadda.

What tones are you trying to get?
I used to use a PQ3 in front of my Splawn for that super midrangey 80's rock sound.
Like Steve said...it will be noisy, but it can get some great sounds this way,
I used to use my gain lower kinda crunchy and use the boost from the PQ3 to get the drive I...
Good luck on the fix.
Having to go back to the SB isn't that bad of a problem to have.
I loved the clips you posted of that bad boy!
btw....are they still around anywhere?
