Ok, so I am using Ernie ball 10's - Gauges .010 .013 .017 .026 .036 .046 . I like the tone of these strings and more important, I like the durability. It might be because I used to play 9's, but I would snap D'addario's a lot on high bends. I was always afraid to crank em. Ernie Balls, no problem. Now the problem, 3 years in, the .017 just doesn't feel right. Feels thick to me and while I can bend it no problem, I find I'm fighting it a little vibrato wise. I have no problem with any of the other heavier gauges 26-46. Anyone know of a set that uses a .016? Worst case scenario, can I just buy a .016 single without affecting tuning stability or tone? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but I thought I'd check with the pros first!

Check out the D'addario balanced 10's set, when the original 10-46 set was made, the technology was not as advanced so they had to round up or round down string gauges, the balanced 10's set has much more equal tension.

i'd try a different brand to see, might make a difference , can also be down to how you've setup the neck or intonated/action at the bridge

a slight truss rod adjustment on one of my guitars made the same .10 gauge strings easier to play or at least reduced the tension somewhat , but not sure if that's a rule of thumb or anything it just did something in the guitars i had =)

Well, I guess my options are go back to 9's and pop the high E or make my own hybrid by combining a 9 and 10 set..

man up and get used to it lol. I use 10's too for the same reason, I'd always pop the high E using 9's. it will take a while but you'll get used to them. I've been using 10-46 GHS Boomers since the mid 80's

i know exactly what you mean about the dreaded G string. But In my case, i use .9's for the most part unless I'm tuning down a half step, but i feel the same way about .16 on that set. Ernie Balls. So i buy a .15 separately on juststrings.com in bulk orders and noticed tuning stability is better and picking and bending ismore comfortable. I had later heard Eddie Van Halen used to replace the .16 with a .15 as well ...which is interesting.

If I didn't man up in 3 years, I don't think I can man up now! haha.. i really hate the feel of it too. I think I am going down to a .16 from a .17 and see where that gets me.. when people ask me it will be my cool little "thing" and the reason for why my tone is so monstrous! Just sucks that I have to buy a bunch of singles from somewhere.

So close to be right... I think I'll just swap in that 16 in place of the 17 and see where that takes me..

I've played 9's for 25 years and do crazy bends. They don't "pop" on me.

I just replace the 17 with a 15. Thats what Hendrix did, along with a 36 low E, which is a bit too slack fer me. A 42 works just ducky.

CT.

I really like the Gilmour sig set GHS makes, 10-12-16-28-38-48. Just feels right to me, easy to bend but not floppy and loose on the wound strings.

I know what you mean. My G string is always slightly off to one side or the other...

Oops! Forgot we were talking guitars for a minute there. Perhaps I've said too much...

But seriously, I've been playing 10's for so long that I'm used to them, but that Gilmour set has me intrigued...
