Opening a return case, even if resolved amicably, dings sellers which can affect their seller discount, which is probably why he wants to go that route. Can't speak for the protection and what not but yeah, I'd imagine you'd be on your own.
 
The standard process is for you to return the item before a refund is given.
 
Maybe I don't know all the ins-and-outs of this, but isn't it in the seller's best interest to do it through eBay, so they don't owe the seller's fees?
 
If he wants to go outside of the rules I'd want refund first.

Sorry sellers, he sent a different guitar than what was advertised? I wouldn't feel bad for him.

Maybe he didn't know but still.

Yup. Gotta protect yourself.
 
If you avoid the eBay rules,you are not protected.

Unless he sends you cash back first,I wouldn't do it. If he pays you back using his credit card,he can deny the charge later.

Yep, this. Ask him to wire you the money before you ship. There's no going back on a wire. If he balks, tell him you'll need to use the ebay return process.
 
Ask him why he wants to go that route, and see what his answer is.
 
I would be bummed if I was the seller. 6 months to a year off equals return? I try to get the year right for instances like this but I never expect to get nailed for being a little off.

You might be bummed, but as the seller, that's your responsibility to get that stuff right. The whole reason the OP bought the guitar was based on the year. In this particular case, it's more of a sentimental thing. But imagine if it was a high-value vintage-style piece we were talking about. That year could make a big difference in value.
 
Makes no sense for him to want to handle it outside of eBay. He will still pay final value fees for selling it unless the return happens thru eBay so it costs him more. Normally eBay will take the money out his account and hold it until the tracking shows it was returned. Use the eBay system, it's there to protect you both.
