Fuck sigs.
Depends on the sig. Some sigs have transcended the player. I think the wolfgang has reached that status by this point, just like his amps and other gear. I own two electric guitars, and both are sigs. One is a 2019 EVH Wolfgang Special, the other is a Washburn N2. Love them both, and not one bit ashamed to rock the sigs onstage. Though I do get why people have problems with them.

I certainly played guitars based on who made them cool in my youth - stuff like Flying Vs and the like. I mostly play Les Pauls now and sure, there's plenty of guys that I idolise that play them. But I keep coming back to them because they seem to do the best job for the music I make and how I like to play.

I guess it comes down to the hero and what you’re looking for from a guitar. Gary Moore was my big thing when I was growing up so inevitably a Les Paul was my first go to but as other influences came along and I started to play in more cover bands I realised versatility was more important to me. At the same time I was massively into toto and so Lukather’s guitar came into view but not because of the sounds he got from it but more that he’s a pro player and needs something that covers a lot of ground so therefore his guitar covers a lot of ground. I’ve been through several Luke’s and other musician guitars but I’m now settled with a PRS DGT, not because it’s a Dave Grissom ( I don’t know much about him) sig but because it’s a great instrument that does a lot of things well.

It’s natural to look to the sounds you love from the artists you love and the easy thought is that I’ll buy their gear and sound like them, obviously it doesn’t work like that but it’s a reference point to build towards.

I play guitars that suit me, love Strat and LP tones but I'm much more comfortable on PRS Custom 24s and BC Rich Mockingbirds. Jackson SL1s are another guitar that I seem to get along with pretty well too.

My first 'real' guitar was an Ibanez Destroyer; mainly because Adrian Smith played one. Got it at 16. Years later, when I got out of the Army I traded it for a Hamer USA Centaura. Just wanted a less 'pointy' guitar; but right after trying one out I knew I was home. Superstrats ever since. Wish I would've kept that Destroyer though.

I have another now. Don't play it much though.

Teenage me still wants a Destroyer like Phil Collen played. :D

Since I play left-handed, signature guitars are not really an option. I have pretty much stuck to what I could find. Luckily, they are all keepers.

I play for what suits.

LP's are technically a signature but they have developed a lot in nearly 70 years or whatever. I use them for blues and metal, semis, Strats and teles for blues, superstrats for metal.

I have owned EVH stuff. The amps are nice, but I have never tried to get VH out of a peavey 5150/6505 or a EVH 5153.

Yeah I have four RG Prestige and love them, but I would not get caught dead with a jem (even though I dig Vai's music).

I use the tool for the job.

It all comes down to the specs and design, I don’t care it it’s a sig or not.

I own an ESP MX specifically due to James Hetfield. He is the reason I started playing; I try to pattern my playing style after his and I play his music often.

That said, I generally enjoy playing my other guitars more. Just personal preference due to shape, construction style etc. Quality of the guitar is not an issue. Because of that, I often wonder why I keep it.

What about you?

I'm not gonna lie, I got an Explorer back in the day because of Hetfield, a Les Paul because of Ace & Slash, an SG because of Angus & Iommi, and Charvels because of the hair metal heroes.

That said, sometimes I don't bond with a guitar I thought I'd bond with. I think it is natural for someone to choose a signature guitar or similar to what their hero plays because it gives you a reference point. I'm sure watching Ace Frehley as a kid did something subconsciously to me.

I play a lot of shit that my heroes play. Not even sigs, though I have a few. I'll see a guy playing a guitar onstage, go, "he looks fucking cool, I want to look like that" and then I buy it. I haven't had a case where I bought one and then didn't like it.

I own a ESP DV8, which I actually didn't buy because of Mustaine, and a Snakebyte, which I didn't buy because of Hetfield. I saw other guys playing the Snakebyte and thought it looked killer. That being said, I'd 100% play an MX if I could get my hands on one. Though I know I'd baby it and never bring it out, so what's the point?

Truth.
I loved Lynch Kamikaze growing up.
Owned literally hundreds of guitars thru the years. The ESP Kamikazie is as solid as it gets for me. Heavy as a les Paul. Plays smooth. Bad ass graphics ...
Ya.... that’s my guitar.
Been playing it last 8 years.
Own 5 others. But that’s always my number one!

My favorite guitar is a Charvel GG sig. I like GG, but most of my guitar heroes play Gibsons and I just don't find Gibsons work for me.

Oh yeah man, me and my friends used to salivate over the Lynch guitars growing up. Same thing with Warren DeMartini's guitars, Jake E. Lee's, etc. Great graphics back in the day!!

Best suit me. A local friend who was a killer guitar player ordered a custom Jackson King V and at the time I had a les paul custom like Rhoads my hero but it really wasn't my fit, to clunky and baseball neck ect...that king v was custom ordered before mustaine and crosby. We ordered at least 15 customs and to this day the older custom king v quality puts it at number 1

THE most comfortable guitar I've owned, was an Ibanez JS-1, the first Japan made Satriani signature.
He really isn't a hero of mine at all :) I like him, but I don't idolize him.

Sadly it got traded for a Carvin 7-string, because that was what I wanted at the time. I regret that. It would still be my number one if I'd kept it.

Starting out I was a huge Lynch fan and owned several sigs. Now I pretty much custom order Tom Anderson's or Suhr's. If you are going to pay $3k for a guitar why not get it exactly the way you want it.
