How many -db is necessary on the hotplate to make this safe?
I found a website that does the conversion
it says 20db = 100 watts
so down -10 would get me to 50 watts....that sound right?

You can run it as is, no problems, but once you really start driving the head into the cabinet, you'll be bordering on blow out.

Moderate volumes though? No sweat.

I'm not sure if it applies in this case, but when it comes to electrical parameters like power, -3dB translates to half power. So, for every 3dB of attenuation, you lose 1/2 the amount of power. I think if you use the -4dB setting or more, you'll be just fine in terms of power ratings on your cab. Of course, Ed Degenaro will probably be a better person to talk to about this...
