I don't put the Randall/Egnater modular stuff in the same boat as modellers. I put them in the real amp category. Surprised you don't feel the same way.

With that being said... there are quite a few choices. For hot rodded Marshall tones (and then some), look into these:

Marshall JVM410
Splawn Quickrod
EVH 5150 III
VHT Sig:X

All of the above can provide a decent blues vibe as well. To a lesser extent you can get the cleans out of them too.

There is also one other amp (which I happen to be selling) that can do all three very well, the Egnater Tourmaster 4100. The cleans are rediculously good on it (which is rare for a high gain multichannel).

Hmmm..... sounds to me like you are in search of the infamous CCV.....

Or,

Splawn Quickrod
Mesa Royal Atlantic
Landry LS100

The above 3 all deliver some hot-rodded Marshally goodness for at or around $2k.

But if you REALLY wanna get it done in a big way: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=100506

Good luck, Russ!

If you like modded Marshall tones, get a modded Marshall!

After trying a bunch of amps, I scored a Friedman modded 79 JMP and that was it. I eventually upgraded to a Marsha when I stumbled on a killer deal for a used one, but the modded JMP was very similar in tone.
I see them around for $1600-$1900.

Based on your criticisms, the preamps you listed may require a complimentary power amp to get the sound(s) you want?

Also, I haven't had similar experiences with modelers or preamps with speaker sim out that you and others have had (I've owned/own many from tonelabs and Zoom up to the Axe-Fx Ultra, and I used my ADA MP-2, and use my JMP-1 + JFX-1 or PSA 1.1 direct to my FRFR; I could even use my Nova System direct if needed, and I'm running a Tech 21 Liverpool in the insert loop of my G-System, etc.).

I'd go looking at hot rodded Marshalls then, or booteek derivatives...

I think I'm in a small minority here at RT though regarding tube amps, music and tones. I dig Vox tones, and I currently have an AC4TV, AC15H1TV and AC30H2 (I'd get more if I had the room for them!). I get the classic Vox jangle and chime, and I get close to breakup at most, I don't push into the Brian May Vox tone territory, nor do I oversaturate with effects like the Edge (I only use a tuner, compressor and AB with my Vox amps, FWIW).

Have you considered Vox (heard good things about the new Handwired series) or other Brit-voiced amps, like Orange or Hiwatt?

For blues and jazz, I'd look at Fender or some booteek derivative maybe? (I have a Fender Deco Tone which I run clean for use with my pedals).

IMO, of course.

Yo Russ....everything you say points to a marshall besides the smokey jazzy tone. I don't see modded marshalls doing that.

thinking about it...I know it's spendy, but a Bogner Ecstasy sounds like it would do all that.

I'll 2nd the 2nd poster's recommendation of the EVH 5153. I have one, and just love it. It has 3 *very* versatile channels, and all of them sound great. Channel 2 is a great hot-rodded Marshall sound, and channels 1 and 3 are very usable and different. I haven't tried any of the other recommendations, though I'd love to get my hands on a Quickrod.

played a Vox AC50 today...

amazing cleans, buttery smooth mids in the lead channel...

wished I had the money...

sigh.

Quickrod is money well spent. I won't ever sell mine, unless i smash it live in a rock n roll moment on stage...then I'll have to buy another one.

I'll second the vote for the Splawn Quick Rod, but I have been having a ton of fun with my Randall RM22 and The Judge module.

Get something with good resale value so when you sell it and get a Friedman you don't get too beat up!

What about a Ceriatone?

I have a Ceriatone Yeti and that amp can do a load of stuff really well.

Great cleans, nice warm, Plexi like breakup and crunch through to 80s hard rock and metal. It can do the hard rock/metal thing fairly similarly to a 5150 TBH.

Plays nicely at low volumes too. I have found some absolutely wonderful warm, bluey tones out of that amp. It loves a boost too.

All handmade and dirt cheap but it is single channel. You can even customise it for next to nothing and Nik (the owner of Ceriatone) is fantastic to work with.

For the price of the amps you mentioned, you could buy a Yeti and AC30 as well!

I'm really liking the VHT Sig:X i got recently but i would still really like to hear my guitar/fx through a Splawn Quickrod or the JVM410h, i think the cleans on those amps might let me down tho

Bogner XTC could be a real winner, but buying two amps for the different purposes might be the best option, say a tweed/fender style combo and a head/cab for the gainy stuff

You must mean the Vox AC50CP and not a vintage Vox Ac50. Still irks me that Vox used that AC50 name in that amp. I used to own an AC50CPH, solid amp. Not very popular, you should be able to score one for cheap.

As for the original question the Marshall JVM410 and Laney Vh100R were 2 amps that came to mind right away.

yeah, it was a CPH and the matching 412. Kid bought it while I was there. They were blowing it out. Think they got it for 1150.

I've been chasing my tail for five years trying to get blood from a stone taking the "best bang for the buck in a box" route.
I've tried Fractal, 11rack, PodXT Pro, Randall/Egnater MTS, and most of the stand alone processors (Prophesy, JMP-1, Piranha, etc).

I tried. But almost-but-not-quite-there isn't cutting it for me anymore.

Because I haven't taken a hard look at actual amp heads in a while, I thought I'd poll the forum as to what is good.
Finances finally cleared up, so price (within reason) isn't too much of an issue.

While I record a variety of styles, my main go-to tone is a hot rodded Marshall.
I also love a hot blues vibe and occasionally a smokey jazz tone.
Not a fan or have a need for dropped tuning or djent, so ultra tight with tons of bottom isn't a necessity.

Please, when giving a recommendation, indicate what style of music the amp is best suited for.

Thank you!
R~

Did you actually play/own a Randall/Egnator MTS amp? It's not a modeler, dude.

EDIT....saw Robot's response...never mind. If anything, the flexibility of the MTS power section is a huge advantage...you can mix/match any tube combinations, all with easy biasing.
