Thoughts? Does one suit a certain style more than the other?

More modern of the two?

Jerry Cantrell tones?

I haven't had a regular 101b but I have a 20th and the classic xtc and I have had the 20th shiva. My take is that they are different animals. When I was in the honeymoon phase with the Shiva I thought it was a good match but that wore off. The Shiva is fantastic at more classic tones but the higher gain settings are fizzy compared to the xtc, imo.

the Shiva with Kt88's has lots of gain and very open unlike the 101b's compressed red channel. I think the 20th shiva is better for high gain rhythm, and the 101b for high gail leads.

I'm wondering the same thing...I've never tried a Shiva, I would imagine the 20th with KT88s would work well for Metal but I can't say. I've played the 101B several times and the red channel does a really good thick somewhat dark high gain. Rhythm and lead. That channel sounds a lot like the red channel on a EVH 5153 to me but the XTC can be thicker , have more low end in comparison. The voicing is very similar though.

I wonder if the KT88 Shiva does a similar type of high gain rhythm / lead but a bit more present and in your face. That could be cool.

I spent some time with a 20th Shiva last weekend- it certainly wasn't dark, but I didn't find it to be very thick like I was hoping.

I have a line on a classic for a great price, so that's another animal I need to consider. I just feel from reading that the 101b would suit my higher gain needs better, but it's a guessing game. Will probably give it a test run this weekend-

20th Shiva/KT88 is by far the most modern-sounding with the mode and EQ switches. So modern that I never used them. Next would be the 101b post '04, then the 101b pre '04, then the Classic.

Good info Ron. What makes the classic less modern than a current 101b? Bass? Gain? Aggression?
