112 vs 212 cab

Currently have a 412 half stack... I want to shrink my rig. Would you recommend going with a 112 or 212 cab? I mostly play at home and just jam with friends.. no gigs at this time. Having had the 412 I'm kind of spoiled with the big full sound it brings, so what would be the best fit to give me a smaller footprint, yet still provide a nice full sound?

Thanks,
John

I own a Marshall 2x12 which is your generic cab brand I guess. :P the 1936 I think is oversized, sure looks it. and I can carry it with one hand.

112s aren't considerably smaller than alot of 212s in the sense that if you can fit a 112 in your car you'll fit a standard 212 no problem (in most cases) and 212s give you the option of mixing speakers and in my experience just fill the room better.

Either way, I'd recommend a semi or open back cab. Just lets more sound spread around. My Egnater 212 sounds huge with the middle back open. And if you go with a 112, I'd get a bit oversize as well and open back. I had a closed back OS 112 and it was good for gigging and such due to mic'ing, but very directional. My vote would be a nice 212.

It's a trade off.

A 2x12 will sound closer to the 4x12 that you're used to, but the 1x12 will be easier to transport and fit on a small stage.
Mic'ed, I'm not convinced that wither will be drastically different.

The major benefit, IMO, of a 2x12 is that you're MUCH more likely to be able to use it with a higher-powered head in a live situation, as individual speakers rarely can handle more than 60-75 watts.

I've got a 5150 head right now... but thinking of adding a Egnater Renegade later this year.. so maybe best to go with the Egnater 212.

I'd say you're limited to 212s there, Buddy. :P Because you'd be seriously limiting your speaker selection to speakers designed to handle >120 watts, which is not many..

You could geta 212 with V30s that I think would compliment your 5150 nicely and are all round great speakers, that's up to preference though. You wouldn't have that option with a 112 because V30s handle 60 watts, and most other speakers around are <120 watts.

I use Mesa Thiele 1x12 cabs with EVM 12Ls 200 watts each. Not a lot of heads that would eat that up. Just a brutal cab. Handles anything I throw at it. I have 2 for a stereo rig (400 watts) and I stack 2 mesa open back 1x12s on top of each with EVM SROs in them. I believe those are 75 watts. Just stacking one pair would sound wonderful. It would save you roughly 10 inches of stage space.

Most 2x12s and 4x12s are roughly 29"w (to fit the average head width). Thieles are 19" wide.

For 1x12 solution I would go to EV speakers. They can handle at least 200W of power per speaker.

True, but there's still a much reduced choice of speakers.

Bogner Cube for the 1x12

Mesa Horizontal Rectifier 2x12

You can throw a 60w speaker in a 1x12 and not worry about blowing it as long as you're not gigging. Let's be realistic. You're going to go deaf first.

I wouldn't wanna risk it with a valve amp though, personally.

Unfortunately yes. Most of speakers are rated 100W top.

I have 2 cubes as well. Great cab. I find it works best with 30s or 25s. So, it doesn't work for my SLO.

I've got a renegade 112, the 2x12 is too heavey, I just added another 1x12 ext cab if I need more oomph
