1x12 Ported or Not??

Hey guys,

Curious as to what your experiences have been with 1x12 cabs that are ported vs non-ported?
Pro's/Con's?

I am playing at home these days but need a solid cab. Some cab's are "tuned" to specific speakers etc.

Ran across almost a steal of a price at GC but the cab has a Celestion 80
My eyes are on another Bogner cube. The other is the EVH 1x12 which is *not* ported.

I don't like ported cabs for guitar in general. To me it adds low end that isn't normally there, and it does so in an "airy" fashion as opposed to a tight, punchy way.

Large, but not ported for a 1x12 for me. But right now I have a Mesa 1x12 that is open back, and I built a new back panel for it that only leaves about 3" open at the bottom, and that works great!!! Makes the cab more open, and I can change the bass response by changing how close it is to the wall.

If the cab is oversized I like some of them. I do have a wide body Mesa/Boogie 3/4 back ported 1x12 w/C90 and the thing kicks ass. I usually leave it paired with a DC-5 widebody combo in a stacked 2x12 setting...sounds a lot bigger than it really is.

I like slightly oversized 1x12, sealed tight a punchy.
I used open back 2x12 (dumble/two rock style oval open back) and loved it for years. Tried a open back 1x12 I hated them. Sounded smaller and looser. Sealed 1x12 makes bigger sound/feel for me.


EDITED: I do like the Mesa thiele ported 1x12 and never played one but the Bogner cube looks and sounds like a really nice 1x12.

I've got one of these, dual front-ported, sealed-back, rear loading, with Scumback BM75 65w 16ohm. Front cover comes off, velcro'ed on. If I leave it on the floor it's got a great thump to it, raise it off the floor, thump goes away. Great little cabinet, I love it.

Ported cabs are far better in every way. Sealed cabs choke the speakers response reducing Xmax and stressing voice coils. Speakers were not designed for sealed cabinets. Just avoid anything tuned as you'll need the specific driver for best results.

Ive never owned a ported cab until recently. Got myself a Port City OS 2X12 loaded w Scumbacks....WOW!!! Cab is incredible. Ive heard a lot of ported cabs sound woofy but not this one. Tones are killer...ive tried a few diff heads too. Well worth the $$. and built like a tank!

I think I will go with the Bogner cube as I found one for a decent price point used.

Great choice, I have one, and you won't be sorry. It's a VERY well made cabinet. Wiring is 10ga. speaker cable inside.

I wouldn't say ported is better or not, but I love my ported Hermida 2x12 with Vintage 30's. It sounds incredible.

Port City 1x12OS's aren't woofy sounding at all. It's a very big and powerful sounding 1x12. You should def try out a ported cab and see what ya like. Good luck!

Yeah I LOVE my CAA 112 that's ported(pretty much bogner cube).
It's not woofy but does has plenty of bottom, yet still full and tight

LOL, yeah, a 1x12 in a 4x12 frame ready for expansion. Seriously 4x12's are always preferred by me anyway.

Just like anything it's not a one size fits all so it's tough to do accurate port/unport tests. There are a lot of variables, cab construction, cab size, speaker(s), front/rear loaded, 4/8/16 ohm selection etc. couple that with subjectivity it turn into a try yourself as only you can decide

I have a Shiva ported 1x12 with a V-30........I never heard a V-30 sound so good......Same results when lifting the cab off the floor, thump goes away......

I was not impressed with the Bogner cube I owned. It was boxy sounding and small - exactly the opposite of what I expected. My Port City 1x12 was much better - the best 1x12 I've ever played through.
