I've heard it said many times around here that 2001 and 2002 were killer years for Les Pauls.

I may be shopping for an R7 or R8 and was wondering what made 2001 so special? Does this apply just to custom shop models and historics or others as well?

Thanks!

I always hear that as well..............when they're being sold. So why are they being sold in the first place if they're so killer?

They are 10 years old now, so they are "vintage" which is better of course.

+1 LOL

HA, maybe you guys are right! I read somewhere (not confirmed) that 2001 was an anniversary year for Gibson. Maybe they put in more attention to detail. haha

True. I've got an '01 Standard and it's a great guitar but I don't think it's particularly "special". Like any mass produced guitar, there's good ones and bad ones... your job is to pick the one that suits you best.

And then modify it!

I think one of the reason those years stood out is because there were nice looking figured R8 and R9 made that time. But I agree, there's really nothing extra special those years imo.

In 2002 gibson introduced their new revision of the lp standard and for that first year or so the regular standards came with some beautifull tops and work.I definatly think that the cutoff for production gibsons for the most part is around 2003 as gibsons quality in their regular production line dropped off alot in their effort to push their more expensive custom shop/historic or vos lines. Things like 1 piece bodies, nice frettwork without sharp edges, nice finishes, decent rosewood boards, and plus tops, which were specs regularly found in normal production guitars were now mostly found on the c.s. models. It seemed that many veteran employees on the line were bumped up to make the cs instruments leaving the newbs to make the regular line. The custom shop line didnt differ that much , other then the gloss non vos finishes back then and that some 58 ri's came with flame tops like a r9. Some prefer the older historic line to when they started the vos series later on.

This is interesting, I have never heard this. I have a 2001 LP Classic that sounds very good (better than most other classics I have played), though I did play many before I settled on this one.

Where's Digi Jams to deliver his daily Gibson thrashing?

Gibson was just celebrating with good models since Y2k didnt happen

My favorite Fender Stratocasters of all time are American Standard 2002's. Go figure? I love em.

I've played many. Vintage, newer doesn't matter. Custom shops. One offs.

My main guitar is an '01 LP Classic Premium Plus that I bought new. At the time I had no idea that the tone if this particular guitar would stand head and shoulders above the many LP's that have come and gone since. I'm not sure it has anything to do with the production year or not but there's definately a difference. I've since purchased an '01 Standard which also sounds great, but not as good as my Classic.

I had a 2001 R7 and it was amazing. Like an idiot, I sold it. One of the best LP's I have played. Tone for days. The main reason for selling it was that it sounded too much like ZZ Top tone and I was wanting something more aggressive.

I had one of those as well. I thought it sounded ok but i couldn't deal with the neck.

So, if the 01's are soo awesome, is this THE LP tone we keep trying to find?

I have a LP classic from 2001. Its a good guitar, but I don't believe in these generalizations at all...

You can get a dog or a player from 2001 or any other year for that matter...

I think the people that started this about the 01' and 02' Historics and CS Gibsons, were referring to various things like the the body contours and bevels on the tops. These were cosmetically pleasing features, and showed attention to detail by the workers at that time, but nobody ever claimed that they were made out of magic wood, or anything.

I think they were referring to a couple of classifieds where the sellers of 01 LP's were saying how great that year was. Marketing 101.
